I'm the curly-haired, half-breed Eye-tal-yan-o, Port-a-ghay-zay, Euro-Latina on the right, who was much too lucky that the gorgeous, knockout blonde beauty on the left was so crazy, she agreed to marry me the moment I dropped to one knee and asked, "Shall we do it? Will you marry me?":



My wedding toast to my wife that evening:

I still don't know what I did to deserve her -- but it truly must have been something wonderful.

Married for three years, but how long have y'all been together (if you don't mind my asking)? Any special plans? I have 6 more months until our 10 year anniversary, though we aren't married and, given we live in OK, Satan will don skates before we will be allowed to marry in this state! HA!

No, I don't mind, although we're not exactly talking Del-and-Phyllis Time... yet. LOL

Let's see... We "met" online here at DU sometime in 2005 -- and I was under the impression she was a guy. "BuffyTheFundieSlayer" was so ... forthright in her posts (mostly in R/T), I had the idea -- a very sexist idea, I know -- she was either a gay man or a MTF! I know how terrible such an assumption sounds, but she lacked the self-effacing qualification most women do; e.g.; "Well, I think... Well, it's just my opinion, but..." "Well, I could be wrong..."

But I digress, as usual. We chatted online (here and on my short-lived message board) for a couple of years -- but we were both involved with other people, so anything more than friendship never crossed Buffy's mind or mine. Then, in 2007, we were both quite coincidentally single, and both went... Oh! Uh...!

We met IRL in August of 2007 (yes, it's quite an anniversary month for us), and just knew this was it. By November, we did The Lesbian Thing, and trailed a U-Haul from Back East some 3,000 miles to the West Coast. And, for better, for richer (see: The Wedding Banquet), here we are.

So we've "known" each other for about six years, been together four, and have been married three.

And I swear I didn't knock her up before the wedding!

On edit: Our special plans (put off for a week and a half, since my wife has to work, and we try our best to avoid events that fill the local hotels with screaming 11-year-olds attending a nearby Jonas Bros. concert) involve a couple of nights at a hotel with loveliest Greek-style jacuzzi bath, delivery from our favorite restaurants, and NO computers or phones. I'd like to get back to our honeymoon spot one day, but we're on a budget, as is everyone. But if you ever get the chance to come out this way and want a fabulous retreat at Lake Tahoe, check out Holly's Place (yes, they like boys, too!).

Congratulations on your anniversary. We celebrated our 19th yesterday.

That was a lesson I should have learned already -- I've been mistaken for a guy myself online more times than I can count for the very same reason (once right here on DU!), which has made for a few uncomfortable moments we won't go into right now. LOL.

It never occurred to me until I was a young adult and read something about the way women are conditioned to qualify their beliefs -- and even facts they know are true beyond a doubt. It was then I started monitoring my own speech and writing for such qualifiers in order to eliminate them. And that's when the trouble started. LOL

Sexist, yeah, but I don't mean it to be condescending. While I work on my own ingrained knee-jerk reactions, what I'd really like to do is make more women aware of how much we (and I still do it, too) couch our expression in so many unnecessary qualifiers, the significance of what we're actually saying gets buried.

But enough of my feminism/empowerment thinking (or any thinking) for this evening. I'm just really happy at the moment. :)

...remind me to tell you how we went 550 miles out of our way (in the snow, uphill, literally) just to avoid Virginia, about the porn-shop billboards all over the South, about seeing the (purportedly) Largest Cross in the World and the (purportedly) "life-sized" replica of Noah's Ark under construction, and about the pleasant but disconcerting chat one morning with the Arkansas Sheriff Straight Out of Central Casting who was looking forward to the '08 election so he could vote for Mike Huckabee -- "'cause I think he's a real good Christian."
