Gay Kiss Causes Walkout During High School Musical
HARTFORD, Conn. (CBS Connecticut) — A Connecticut high school musical causes a public walkout after two men in the cast kissed during the performance.

It happened during the “Zanna Don’t!” musical at Hartford Public High School last Friday.

“There are always circumstances (in organizing these programs) under which the values of the student or their family come into play,” said Adam Johnson, principal of the Government and Law Academy at the high school, told CBS Connecticut.

He added that many students expressed a desire to skip the show due to the subject matter.

1. Oh for God's sake.............
I personally find public displays of affection between persons of opposite gender or same gender inappropriate. I feel they should be reserved for more intimate settings.

But in a show like Zanna Don't, the characters are just that, characters. If those that left have such a problem I wonder if it is problem with two men kissing or a problem with intimacy in general. I suspect the latter.

2. Idiots
I grew up watching opposite-genital couples with their hands on each others' assess and their tongues down each others' throats. Somehow a little peck between two guys is the end of the world?

4. If they went without knowing what the play was about, that's on those who walked out.
I think the using of a play script that has a gay kiss in a high school musical was a not well thought out decision.
Save the social upheaval and cutting edge things for away from school, the kids have all they have to deal with to even graduate.
I wouldn't suggest a heavily religious theme for a high school play either.
Controversy never really helps education at the high school level, save it for college after they've gotten the 3 R's and driver's education.

5. Sorry I have to ask is a "straight kiss" ok?
Because when I was in high school there were plenty of those in plays that that were performed. ALso there are Gay kids in high School.

I only ask is because I'm trying to figure out this mindset. Heterosexual teenagers can be themselves in high school but Gay teenagers have to wait till college. A kiss is a kiss, if one kiss is banned then all should be banned.

Until people realize That Homosexuality is not a mature thing but something that one grows up with whether they know it or not is the same thing as growing up with Heterosexuality.

6. Students have the capacity to understand "social upheavel and cutting edge things", don't they?
The comfort and privilege of straight people isn't on the list of responsibilities for gay people.

Why in the world should gay people suppress their culture, their stories, their pda's even -- when young kids are inundated by messages and commercial images affirming heterosexuality 24/7 -- is inexplicable. It's the textbook example of hetero-normative bias.

And your qualifier regarding the "heavily religious theme" introduces an element of morality into all this hetero-normative bias that really rubs me the wrong way. It's not an equivalent comparison. When people leave a performance when two opposite sex religious people kiss on stage -- *then* we'll have a comparison.

Other than that, I hope you'll stick around for the discourse. If we can manage to create one in this forum. It's not like the old days around here but that's another story altogether.

8. So...
Gays and their supporters should just sit down and be quiet and enjoy the heterosexual, lightly religious high school plays. Wait, if gay children are such a disturbance, why not kick them out of school, so everyone's education isn't bothered? The majority of kids have to learn them letters and maths! Forget creative thinking, curiosity or discovery. Facts are facts, never wrong and make the world go 'round!

And why does college get the unique position here? What's so special about it? That the student is no longer a child and can have sex? So 1) only adults are allowed to discover their selves? 2) being gay is all about sex? Are you saying homosexuality is an advanced sexuality? Does it require more maturity to encounter? If I was fine with it in the first grade, does that mean I grew up too fast? I'm glad I realized then that boys liking boys was horrible and disgusting and pretended to be straight; might have not had a childhood if I hadn't. Right?

18. read the article...everyone was well aware of it...the assholes who walked out
appeared to be all members of the football team...instead of just staying away, they decided to make a statement, the statement being, that they're assholes.

Unless, of course, you're a raging bigot.

9. They should incorporate that scene into a halftime show.
The show is a musical after all.

Why not somehow incorporate that awful, disgusting, make-you-tingly-in-you-pance, icky gay kiss thing into a halftime show.

Perform it during Homecoming.

Let them walk out then and show the entire alumni what cretins they are.

12. In the thread about the Hasidic bus in Brooklyn where the woman was asked to move back to
the women's section (in the back of the bus), some on DU were stating that they felt like coming to New York to get on that bus and sit with AND make out passionately in public with their opposite gender romantic partners. Many other DU members applauded that post.

So it's interesting to see some here say that this particular PDA is "inappropriate".

Just goes to show you.

14. Honestly don't blame you or any other valuable members here who have moved on.
With regard to GLBT people, 'dispiriting' is how I would characterize some of the developments in terms of moderation and evolution of the membership here on DU. I don't know if the fact that I'm middle-aged explains why I am less ... what would be the word to use here ... idealistic (?) than many others, but I stay here for reasons of my own, and on balance, I feel I know how to make DU what I want it to be, more or less.

But I've always been kind of resourceful. Most people aren't. :(
