New push to ban gay marriages heats up
Conservatives' efforts to ban gay marriage will get an assist from U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa.

U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas, a likely conservative candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, is pushing a constitutional amendment that would ban gays and lesbians from marrying. A similar amendment failed overwhelmingly in the House and Senate last year.

Though opposed to the "Marriage Protection Act," which defines marriage as the union between a man and a woman, Specter plans to vote for the measure when it comes before a Senate subcommittee tomorrow.

Specter, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has opposed amending the Constitution to ban states from allowing gay marriages. But he has supported allowing such bills to go to the Senate floor for votes.

Naturally, Brownshirt ... oops! I mean "Brownback," is pandering to his mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging, room-temperature-IQ base in pushing for this. It would almost be worth having this scombag piece of shit win the Repugnantcan nomination just to see him go down in flames (and, hopefully, take his inbred fun-D'uh-MENTAL-ist followers with him).

1. No matter what happens...
legalized discrimination will be overturned.

It's not a matter of whether, it is a matter of when.

4. Hopefully it happens in my lifetime
I'm not sure it will, and I'm not that old either.

5. Then fight for it.

I'm constantly working on people I interact with when the issue comes up.

They are so ingrained to believe that being gay is somehow a choice. It's easier to get teens to actually think about it, but I don't care who it is... they'll hear it.

I simply narrow it down to, "So when did you choose to be straight?"

And take the logic from there.

7. I agree but
it is a tremendous effort. We are working on it. The thing I need most to get a handle on is how to even discuss this issue with the "true believers" who do not hear. If we can break through that barrier we will be home free I think.

8. Yes, they are VERY difficult to get through to.
Logic is the cornerstone of reason, and these people have no rational foundation.

They cannot be reasoned with, not even through their own system of thought.
I've tried it with very little success I might add.

I think it will be a gradual evolution equivalent to the acceptance of equal rights eventually becoming colorblindness.

I do not believe there will be nearly as much violence involved, but it will happen.

I'm thinking one more generation and we'll see things take a solid swing for the better.

9. We all need
to keep each other up on any breakthroughs we have. I have found wonderful, somewhat successful ways to deal with those who are not totally unreasonable. At least it starts them to thinking about these issues in a human kind of way. The violence scares me, I hope you are right that there will not be as much.

I do agree about the generation timeframe. My kids and their friends are not hung up about this at all. They must be brought into this, we have wonderful groups in the high schools and universities who have been very involved. This will be their success, we are just the first wave (really not even the first wave).

I'm sorry; I live in Texas....I cannot explain the extreme homophobia of America except to say they seem to be the most convenient target of the brainwashed santimonious crowd.

3. secession
It's kind of a fantastic scenario, but imagine if a federal anti-gay amendment provided the impetus for the northeastern states to secede. It would certainly make for interesting times.

6. I want to know what these people have on Specter
or is he finally showing his true colors

I'm sure the Log Cabinites who have consistantly endorsed him are doing cartwheels over this new development today

10. I'm pissed at Specter.
He's just another snivelling, right wing Bush lover. There's no other explanation for allowing this piece of hateful shit to get to a vote.

Fuck Arlen Specter.
