Maine Conservatives Launch New Gay Threat
A day after Maine voters decided to keep the state's gay rights law on the books, the losing side said Wednesday its main focus now will be to pass a state constitutional amendment to protect traditional marriage.

Tuesday a ballot measure to void the state's LGBT civil rights was defeated by a 55 to 45 percent margin. (story)

While conceding the referendum to those who sought to preserve gay rights protections in the Maine Human Rights Act, organizers of the repeal campaign said the fight is far from over.

"Though we are disappointed in the vote on Question One, we remain committed to marriage as the beautiful and loving union between a man and a woman," said the Rev. Sandy Williams of the Coalition for Marriage, who challenged Gov. John Baldacci to introduce a constitutional amendment to that effect.

1. These people never quit, do they.
Makes me wax nostalgic for the 60s when fundie churches mainly worried about a communist takeover.

2. Idaho GOP will announce gay marriage banning as their first priority
when the legislator convenes in January.

There are many of us ready to tell them that we have real problems in the state that need to be addressed like low wages; lack of insurance; crumbling school infrastructure, etc.

If they want to worry about morality issues, that's where they need to start. They are just using the gay issue to avoid the real issues.

I think the public is finally waking up to that.

6. Amen to that. . .
This is both unneeded and unnecessary - it is just sour grapes because the fundies got their butts kicked and they have to show the national groups they can pull off the Taliban agenda.

3. If they're not careful...
...they'll wind up with a Massachusetts situation. Two parts of the state constitution -- Article One, sections 1 and 6a -- would conflict with such an amendment, leaving the resolution of the conflict up to the courts.

4. christian taliban is up to something in CA for next year as well...
another one of these initiative things I hear, relating to gay marriage, or banning civil unions for gays AND heteros.

Maybe next to tatoo bibles on the penises of all newborn boys? Gosh guess that would just be the new testament on circumsized boys, eh?

5. What do they have to "protect" traditional marriage from???
I have never been able to compute how a gay couple committing to each other threatens anything!

7. Even in Maine, they're like the Energizer Bunny...they just keep hating...
and hating and hating and hating.

You'd think they'd run out of hate eventually, but apparently they have a never-ending supply.
