Newton named safest city for low crime rate

November 21, 2005

NEWTON, Mass. --Low crime rates and no murders earned this city the title of the nation's safest for the second year in a row, according to a company's annual survey.

"Newton outshines other cities when it comes to fighting crime," said Scott Morgan, president of Morgan Quitno Press, which publishes "City Crime Rankings," an annual reference book to be released Monday.

The ranking is based on crime statistics provided to the FBI in six categories including murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and car theft. In this year's survey, 369 cities were considered.

Warwick, R.I., at No. 16, was the only other New England city with a population of more than 75,000 to appear in the top 20 safe cities.

The ranking also listed the nation's most dangerous cities. The former industrial city of Camden, N.J., got the top spot. Springfield, Mass., was No. 19 and Hartford, Conn., was No. 23.

1. It's also one of the wealthiest cities. I wonder if that has anything
to do with it.

2. Ok, how did they miss Baghdad. If it´s so safe, lets build a Wal-Mart.
or a Focus on the Family Intelligent Church and Designs on Charitable Giving Center.

4. Why 'gay' congressman Frank? He's also, for my money...
... the brightest, most articulate, and the most effective among progressive DEMS in the house. Being gay, is of course, a big plus. A bit like icing on an already fantastic cake.

Is being gay and representing the "safest" district some kind of anomaly?

People in Massachussetts are no dummies.

Leave it to the fake news programs to do the mainstream media's job for them. On last Thursday's The Daily Show with John Stewart, "correspondent" Ed Helms sat down with the Bay State's own Brian Camenker, head of the anti-gay group Article 8 Alliance, to ask him about the horrible consequences of gay marriage in Massachusetts. Helms asked Camenker if gay marriage has brought down the quality of life in the state, caused a spike in homelessness rates, or lowered the quality of the air. Although obviously a joke, Helms's questions were, in fact, reasonable in light of Camenker's extreme rhetoric about LGBT people. Why not ask an activist who not only claims that civil marriage rights for same-sex couples will be the undoing of the state but who gets plenty of ink saying just that in the state's largest daily to explain himself?

Camenker, who clearly did not understand that he was being made fun of, answered: "I could sit here and I could probably, you know, find some way of connecting the dots to gay marriage to all of these if I had enough time and I did the research."

Helms responded, "Yeah, why take the time to do the research when saying it is so much faster?" The screen then cut away to graphics showing that Massachusetts ranks 50th among the states in illiteracy, 48th in per capita poverty and 49th in divorce. The unwitting Camenker proved to be the same-sex marriage movement's best PR machine, exposing the baseless fear-mongering used by same-sex marriage opponents to a national audience.

6. Hmmm
Warwick will be out of that ranking next year. We've had two murders this year. Both women killed by boyfriends/husbands.

My BIL is a city detective and our biggest crime? Domestic assault and drunk driving.

Very, very blue collar city with a pretty lower middle class standard of living (except for one section) so I don't buy the Newton is safe because they're rich argument.
