Mass. Archbishop: Catholic Church Isn't Prejudiced Against Gays
http://www.365gay.com/Newscon05/11/112405massArch.htm

Boston Archbishop Sean O'Malley is calling for an end to prejudice against gays.

O'Malley, the leading Catholic in Massachusetts, says in a letter sent to the nearly 300 parishes in the Boston Archdiocese that he doesn't want gays to feel like the church discriminates against them despite its opposition to same-sex marriage and gays in the priesthood.

O'Malley says the church's opposition to same-sex marriage is not based on hostility toward gays, but rather the conviction that marriage between a man and a woman is important for children and society.

O'Malley says many gays in the church lead holy lives.

all together now boys and girls--BULLSHIT!

1. What a load, part 2
O'Malley can stuff it.

When the Pope comes out as a homophobic lunatic, without equivocation and in no uncertain terms, calling gay people "sinners", then I think it's safe for anyone to assume the Church is anti-gay.

This is fine with me - the more narrow and simple-minded religions become, the quicker they will all pass away, and we'll all be better off for it.

2. Oh I get it...
they (meaning the old-line Catholic Church, not progressive churches) won't let gay people take part in at least one of the sacraments (marriage), they don't really invite them to talk openly about who they are or publicly acknowledge them as gay people in parish life, they still teach that the fact of being gay itself is somehow wrong, but they do want everybody to get along.

:eyes:

If that's not pretty darn close to prejudice, what is? It might be a skosh less crazy than the fire-and-brimstone rhetoric of the fundamentalist churches, but it still sounds patronizing and excludes them from many of the most meaningful activities within the church.

"Less than it should be" is still not right. Would straight people accept being treated that way?

7. you'd think
You'd think they would at least save their bullshit for a time when they weren't in the middle of gathering signatures to put an anti-gay measure on the fucking ballot.

8. Hmm...
I remember a few years ago when I was a sophomore in high school, 2001 I believe (I went to a Catholic high school in small-town rural Ohio) that one of the priests came to our Religion class and had general discussions about all kinds of things. He was probably 27 or 28 years old and I suppose took a progressive view on things. I specifically remember him saying something like "homosexuality is one the greatest things to benefit the priesthood". Let me elaborate. He went on to explain how many gay and bisexual Catholic men - not knowing how to confront their sexuality - would join the priesthood as an alternative.

And now we see that gays are being banned from the priesthood - even though that vow of celibacy applies for all priests! Makes sense? Nope!
