Reno man weds his 30-year male partner (in Canada)
December 3, 2005

Bill Finch had three wishes before he died of cancer, and one of them was to marry his same-sex partner of 30 years.

His companion, Bob Jarmon, and two Unitarian Universalist clergy -- one in Reno and the other in Canada -- made it happen.

On Oct. 25, the Sun Valley couple married in Canada, where same-sex marriage is legal. The pair married at a time when the topic of homosexuality, gay unions and gay clergy is stirring controversy within Christian denominations in the U.S

On Thursday, the Vatican issued a document restricting gays from becoming Roman Catholic priests.

Before the couple headed on the road to Canada, the Rev. Greg Stewart, pastor of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Northern Nevada, went to the couple's Sun Valley residence and conducted a union ceremony in their cramped living room.

1. That's really wonderful and really sad.
It's good that they had 30 good years together, but cancer has robbed the world of yet another gentle soul.

...and Rumsfeld will probably live to be 100. Sometimes life makes no sense.

4. Yes it is, and sad too.

I'm glad that the country in North America where all people are
created equal without regard to race, religion, sexual orientation allowed this to happen. I'm glad that one country out there has the temerity to stand up for the rhetoric that comes out of the most "patriotic" parts of the nation and follow through on that rhetoric.

Here's to Canada. :toast:

May this country one day find it in itself to emulate them.
