Australian PM Faces Party Backlash Over Anti-Gay Marriage Stand

Australian Prime Minister John Howard is facing a revolt within his Liberal Party a day after declaring he would never permit passage of legislation allowing same-sex marriage or civil unions.

Howard was asked yesterday by reporters about gay unions after same-sex couples began exchanging vows in Britain. (story)

"I would be opposed to it," said the PM. "I think marriage is for men and women. That's why we amended the Marriage Act."

Howard's Liberal government passed legislation last year defining marriage as between a man and a woman. (story)

...is nothing more than a racist, homophobic, bigot. Who believes he does nothing wrong and has the right to an opinion on everyone elses life. Well he can go to fucking hell and beyond for all I care.

New Zealand has a form of same sex partnership......friends of mine from NZ just became engaged. Sort of like Canada and the US, I guess........
