Stations Dropping 'Book Of Daniel' Grows
(New York City) Faced with a deluge of emails, phone calls and letters NBC affiliates, especially in the Bible belt are growing concerned about NBC's new series "The Book Of Daniel".

On Thursday a second network affiliate dropped the show which features one of primetime's few openly gay male characters, has a lesbian supporting character and is written by a gay screenwriter. The series is planned to debut January 6 at 9:00 pm E/P time.

The American Family Association has targeted NBC affiliates and sponsors. The network has already dismissed calls for it to drop the series.

The anti-gay group has been calling for its members to complain about the series, but stopped just short of suggesting a boycott. (story

This is just getting insane! I happen to be a christian as well as Gay. I sure would like to know what religion they think they belong to.

5. Time for some action ...
... if your NBC affiliate drops the show, email, write or call them and explain that YOU will be boycotting the products of the sponsors of any show they put in its place.

Unfortunately, 'Christians' are now being peddled as a 'consumer group with clout' instead of people of true faith. And they're too ignorant/stupid/trusting to realize it ...

But we non-Fundies are a much larger 'consumer group', so let's remind NBC, and the other networks, of that fact.

15. This is the best that we can do to fight the "family" people
Besides many LTTE and thread / blog posts like this.

Keep it in the public eye. The UNchristian "christians" like to do their dirty work in the dark and behind the scenes, cuz they know that most people would eventually see them as they really are -- extremists with a hateful agenda.

The WORST thing we can do is let them get away with this kind of thing. I'm fed up!

7. Isn't "Will and Grace" on NBC?
Don't most of these stations carry "Will and Grace"? I could be wrong, but I suspect there just might be a couple of gay characters on that show as well. :-)

That would be typical, insane ranting and fear about something they haven't even seen.

9. "I sure would like to know what religion they think they belong to."
They belong to the religion of "Saint" Cyril, Bishop of Alexandria, 5th Century AD, the first bishop to call himself "patriarch," who banned women from speaking in church, and required them to veil themselves, who instigated pogroms against the Jews in the once-tolerant, open and learned city of Alexanria, who inspired mobs of "Christian" monks to burn parts of the Alexandria Library, including the earliest Christian gospels (the Gnostic Gospels), in one of which Mary Magdalen was head of the Apostles--a movement that represented a completely egalitarian and communal form of Christianity that was much closer to the life Jesus himself led than anything later created by the Church of "Saint" Cyril; and who, finally, set his mobs upon the beloved philosopher and teacher Hyptia, dragged her through the streets of Alexandria and skinned her alive. Hypatia was the link between the world of ancient Greek and Roman learning, and the new religion of love and equality that was destroyed by these 5th Century "patriarchs" and powermongers. They took over the Church and sent it straight to hell, to worship the devils of property, riches, political power, state authority, male egocentricity, thought-control, and violence. The simple, elegant message of Jesus--"love they neighbor"--has only just begun to be recovered in the last several hundred years.

To this day, Cyril bears the appellation "saint" which means, quite literally, that he is in Heaven with God.

Flaying was thought in those times to prevent the soul from going to Heaven. So, if Cyril sits with God, and Hypatia does not, then it is not a Heaven that I want any part of, nor is this a religion that Jesus would have anything to do with, in my opinion. Poor man! What's been done in his name is pretty bloody awful.

The Church of "Saint" Cyril. That's what they belong to. The Church of Ignorance. The Church of Murder. The Church of Warmongers. The Church of Hypocrites. The Church That Went 180 From "Love Thy Neighbor."

12. no one mentioned the fcc revelation that there were 25 k complaints
all from tthe same source, while only 5 complaints not related to that source, this is NATIONWIDE!....i forget what the complaints were about, but one of the reasons the gopigs are very successful is that every time they do something, they're innocent as the driven sleet (no one remembers they've been spiking the system via organised political actions)...anyway, ALL popular entertainment is either approved by our nazipooh masters or it isn't allowed to exist, certainly not mainstream, in all probability.....

I'm an atheist and I'd watch the show just to piss the fundies off, if only it were on at a different time. Any chance of getting them to switch it around? (I'm commuting to work at the time it's on).

17. Great headline!
"Stations Dropping 'Book of Daniel' Grows" - makes it sound like stations are lining up in droves to drop the show... then you read it and find out that a SECOND station has dropped it! 2 stations out of how many NBC affiliates? Sheesh. Talk about a tempest in a teapot. I'm surprised they didn't say that the number of stations dropping the show has DOUBLED!!!!!!! LOL

18. What is WITH these people, why can't they just not watch?
Geez. Plenty of stations play things I find to be offensive - mostly, stuff that portrays men as being stupid football-watching boob-chasing buffoons, and women to be whiny needy creatures who aren't complete without a boyfriend. I just don't watch those shows. Why is that not an option for these people? Argh!

19. I find the "700 Club" categorically offensive
particularly with the history of remarks embracing violence by Pat Robertson. Yet, one of my local television stations carries his "CBN News" program. Perhaps it is past time we organize a complaint boycott of our own to those stations which carry the 700 Club. I'm rather sick of the double-standard of "decency" which the Right pushes upon everyone. I don't need the American "Family" Association to function as my social "censor." And no one has appointed them the exclusive spokespeople for GOD.

My decision? I'm not going to miss it. The stations that won't air it can play "Leave it to Beaver" for all I care. I hope iTunes posts it so nobody who wants to see it will miss it.

22. Hardright religious extremists ...
Edited on Sat Jan-07-06 02:41 AM by Maat
just like other religious extremists around the world who needn't be named, in my humble opinion.

Dobson is not only a hardright religious extremist, in my opinion, he's operates a Booosh political machine, and he's proud of it.

And the Wildmons of the American Family Association (who's behind this pressure) ... well, they need to get lives, instead of worrying what I watch! Really rightwing nuts.

23. I really wanted to like this show, but...
Evidently Daniel is spelled D-Y-S-F-U-N-C-T-I-O-N-A-L.

My partner and I were looking forward to the premiere of this show since the promotions kept burbling about how witty and intelligent it was. Unfortunately, we saw precious little wit or good writing. It was more like a tediously long Saturday Night skit parroting predictable Episcopalian stereotypes: wealthy, alcoholic, worldly and displaying an ethical passivity that passes for liberalism.

There were no characters we actually liked. The minister's three children were spoiled, amoral, and either sullen or arrogantly obnoxious; the wife was a slightly hysterical alcoholic, and the minister himself appeared weak and ineffectual.

The golden opportunity for some truly ground-breaking work in the recurring character of Jesus was tossed away in favor of a painfully conventional image of a pretty Aryan youth. In fact, this Jesus looked so much like the poster child for White American Christians that it gave me the impression Daniel was delusional rather than communing with the son of God. Jesus didn't even look Jewish, much less like the dark-skinned Semitic man that would approach historical accuracy.

The premiere was two hours long, but we closed the Book after one hour.

25. Putting Words in Jesus's mouth
is treading on pretty dangerous ground.

Haven't seen it. Just read that the Priest has conversations with Jesus. And have to wonder about the wisdom of that choice. Putting words in the deities mouth is very much like a direct attack upon them and their core beliefs.

27. Actors who have played Jesus
* Willem Dafoe in The Last Temptation of Christ
* James Caviezel in The Passion of the Christ
* Jeremy Sisto in Jesus (made for tv)
* Brian Deacon in Jesus (from '79)
* Claude Heater in Ben-Hur
* Kenneth Colley in Life of Brian
* Ted Neeley in Jesus Christ Superstar
* William Powell in Jesus Of Nazareth
* Max Von Sydow in The Greatest Story Ever Told
* H.B. Warner in The King Of Kings
* Jeffrey Hunter in the King of Kings ('61)

Obviously all those movies were a direct attack upon Christians and their core beliefs, by your logic.

28. Last Temptation stirred a hornets nest as well.
It's not merely portraying Jesus.
Showing Jesus on top of a Hill giving the Sermon on the Mount as in Ben Hur. Is not going to be controversial for most christians. Showing Jesus and Mohammed having an Intimate relationship can get a death warrant issued for you.

If you stick to depictions of "generally accepted" gospels you should be on fairly safe ground. But showing an image of Jesus implying it acceptable to sin? (Boys will be boys.)

That in the 70's, wasn't it? "Oh, God" with John Denver.

Offensive? Not offensive? It didn't stick to depictions of gospels.

26. Very few Gay story lines on Network TV--time to read.

I want gay stories and I guess the only way to get them is to read the many many novels that are available.

The religious right censoring this show reminds me to look elsewhere for entertainment.
