Czech Prime Minister Jiri Paroubek has appealed to President Vaclav Klaus to sign legislation allowing same-sex couples to register and receive some of the benefits of marriage - a bill that Klaus has opposed.

Paroubek in a letter to Klaus said that the legislation is an attempt to create a level playing field for gay and lesbian couples in areas like inheritance.

The appeal elicited a stinging rebuke from the President.

The bill is "an attempt to legalize the disintegration of traditional institutions on which the society is based," Klaus said in a statement after the letter became public.
