Why don't we just become a religion?
Wouldn't that solve pretty much everything?

Let's accept the fact that this is a fucked up country that places organized "religion" over everything else, including human rights, authentic spirituality, freedom, honor, truth, science, liberty, love and family.

So let's join the party and just declare ourselves a religion.

We can appoint Barney Frank or someone as Head Grand Holy Poobah and then systematically attack every anti gay and lesbian law as being unconstitutional, because they violate freedom of religion.

I don't see the downside.

5. Ack...
That guy was SUCH a hack. Both Heinlein AND Herbert could've done the same thing, but both had too much integrity to play the cult card.

14. Male or female?
Just asking 'cuz I've got two characters who are destined to fall in love but my regular publishers won't take a story dealing with "alternative lifestyles."

<sigh>

18. Check out the Magic's Promise/Price/Peril trilogy by Mercedes Lackey.
I read these in the early 1990s. The first book's cover does not reveal that that the central character is gay: the reader finds this out gradually as the character himself learns this. He has to deal with this along with the tremendous magical power he obtains through a tragic turns of events.

8. The holy book's already written
The Wizard of Oz.

We can draw our deities from there (e.g: Saint Scarecrow) and solemnly infer divine meaning from various fables and passages therein.

L. Frank Baum's childhood home becomes Bethlehem.

You get the picture.

10. And after that shouldn't someone give us a country. The Nazis
tried to destroy us during the holocaust - shouldn't we get a country out of that?

15. Check out the Church of Reality
Mark Perkel, liberal blog general, has formed an official church that he says believes in things that are real, provable, absolute. No invisible cloud bbeings. No sin or resulting condemnation. And liberal as hell in its social positions.

This is a REAL, recognized, official church. He went through the process of making it legal. I understand that there are still a lot of open positions in his church's heirarchy. Wanta be a bishop? Here's your best chance.

I think you can find a link to Perkel at BartCop.

19. Gay Friendly Churches
In response to the reply above...

If you truly are interested in an accepting church - check out MCC. Metropolitan Community Church. http://www.mccchurch.org. I go to the one here in Portland. I love it. Started by Troy Perry (a hardcore activist for GLBT rights), MCC has been around for something like 30 years now.

20. Thanks bhb for the recommendation. A number of friends
have tried to get me to go to the local MMC, and while I hear very nice things about it I just can't step foot inside even a gay church.

I have been so hurt by so-called Christian values and what Christians continue to say about gay people, that I don't have an ounce of interest anymore in any form of church or religion.

I think by the number of sarcastic and funny responses in this thread, I'm not alone.

But I'm glad you like the Portland MMC! ;)

22. Totally understand :)
I grew up in a Christian environment - the school the church etc. Though when I came out when I was 14 (now 23), I felt the same way that you do--and have for a long time. Honestly - I'm still trying to find my faith. It's very hard when we see such hatred and bigotry coming from many communities of faith. Hmph. :)

Laws that are generally applicable can be enforced regardless of religious objection.

26. But if 'my' church will marry 2 guys, then it's a restriction of my
religious freedom if the gov't recognizes some but not others. If they want 10 commandments in schools, we'll write some! If they want prayer in school, we'll have our own prayer ritual (flashback lockerroom fantasy!)

And why not use the Bible? We could find some sort of secret decoder ring in a box of Crackerjacks that gives the finder the true interpretation of the Scriptures not in the way Falwell, Dobson and the other Radical clerics say it says, we could be tax exempt, we could get faith based funding - in short, we could find ways to make the biggest mockery and paroday of every extreme position that the fundies have out there.
