Gays and lesbians are already covered under the county's human rights law. The city of Seattle has offered full LGBT protections since 1986, as have several other municipalities in the state.
The county ordinance brings its human rights law into conformity with state law and would continue to protect the LGBT community if the Washington rights measure is overturned by voters.
State lawmakers passed a bill affording full protections in January ending a 30 year battle for LGBT rights in the state (story) but almost immediately a conservative group began an initiative to have the measure repealed. (story)
