(New York City) In a surprise move the United States has supported a move to vote on the inclusion of a European LGBT rights group on a United Nations advisory panel.
In February the State Department came under fire for joining with Iran, Zimbabwe and other repressive regimes in excluding two gay rights groups the U.N. Economic and Social Council.
At the time the State Department said that concern over potential support for pedophilia was behind the U.S. vote. (story) The decision reportedly was made by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, prompting a rebuke from openly gay Massachusetts Democrat Barney Frank.
"I had hopes for better from you," Rep. Frank said in a letter to Rice. (story).
