The 2006 Mississippi Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church on Wednesday reaffirmed the denomination's stance against homosexual practice while affirming the "sacred worth" of all individuals.
More than 1,000 clergy and lay delegates ended the three-day conference that approved a no-increase budget for the coming year, recognized new church development in Northeast Mississippi and heard a plea from the state's education chief for support of public schools.
The homosexual issue, a subject of debate in the denomination nationally, arose in a resolution that no groups that promote the practice of homosexuality should be allowed to rent a United Methodist facility.
In September 2005 the Reconciling Ministries Network, a pro-homosexual organization, hosted a conference at Lake Junaluska in North Carolina, a Southeastern Jurisdiction ministry and property of the United Methodist Church.
