Anti-Gay Marriage Vote Looms In Massachusetts
http://www.365gay.com/newscon05/01/010405massAmend.htm

As the Massachusetts legislature prepares to begin its new session this week more than two-thousand same-sex couples who have wed in the state wonder if those marriages will be wiped out by a proposed constitutional amendment banning gay unions.

But, there are growing indications that the measure will not survive the second passage required to send it to voters.

Democrats increased their numbers at the the State House last November, and even one of the men who wrote the proposed amendment is having second thoughts about it.

1. someone correct me if i'm wrong here
i beLieve the first passage came with 3 votes over the necessary totaL - 2 of those 3 votes just got knocked the fuck out of office.

so, everyone wouLd have to vote the same way to have it pass again (this time by 1 vote). do you think any of the previous supporters may Look at the ass kicking their side just took at the voting booth and decide for poLiticaL expediency?

2. Let's not relax on this one. It's a hard struggle.
I do fear that it could pass through. The best option is that Brian Lees, a Republican senator, along with the Democratic leadership in both houses, simply adjourn the session without consideration. If this does not work, then vote it down. Now Lees, along with others can say, "we cannot go forward with this attempt to force people to divorce."

3. i understand but
i have a rosey outLook based on the poLL resuLts of nov. 2 here.

aside from the 2 i referenced above, a sLate of repubLicans were brought in (by mitt romney) to run. the main issue was the gay marriage vote (some of their campaign Literature/websites were funny in a disturbing way). they were rejected en masse.

it's true, we have our own freepers here, but they're smaLL (they just seem Large thanks to fLooding the LTTE sections of every newspaper). i'd Like to think the message got out to the poLiticians that they're gonna be next* if they vote for this amendment.

* i'm sure bush was a big factor in the poLL turnout, and the democrat route that ensued. it had to be quite unnerving for repubLicans here on nov. 3. :D

5. The problem is
Something like 12 of the votes against the amendment came from people who do not support gay marriage at all ... And the reason they did not vote in favor of the amendment is because it calls for civil unions.

My fear is some of those votes could go the other way this time around because this may be their only chance to ever get a gay marriage ban on the ballot.

4. Would a referendum pass in Mass.?
Given that massive votes elsewhere in the U.S. do you think that the good people of Massachusetts would vote for or against gay marriage?

It would be a large step if the constant stream of right-wing victories were stopped.
