9. True.
Lightning never strikes twice in the same place.

Seemed to work fine and dandy in 2004.

2. But we still lost badly nationwide.
All those people who told us to wait until after the election, well, it's after the election. I'm wondering where all of our supposed straight allies are now. Will they help us fight for our equal rights now that they've allowed us to get pushed farther away from them?

5. We got lucky
That the 4-3, civil unions vs marriage thing confused the issue. If there had been a full MA "marriage now" decision, the GOP may have been able to use it more, but in any event, the issue is losing its hot button power. Deeply-held political belief, yes, but white-hot OMG rage: not so much anymore.

7. You contradict yourself in your post
If it's not a hot-button issue any longer, then we didn';t get "lucky."

10. "We got lucky"
"the issue is losing its hot button power"

Which one is it? Dodging a bullet, or no bullet fired?

11. People get tired of rage.
A very valid, and oft used civil rights tactic is to push people, enrage them, confront them with whatever they consider outrageous, until they're so used to seeing it that it isn't outrageous anymore.

The GLBT movement used to use that tactic more. It would be nice if we still did.

Yes, you get some blowback initially, but in the end you win.

12. Oh please, gay marriage is not a hot button issue in New Jersey.
Half of NJ is a suburb of NYC. The other half is like a suburb of Philly. Sure the genuine phobes are strong champions of their cause, but New Jerseyans are not motivated around these issues like many fundamentalist regions.

14. As someone who lives in a "red" county in NJ, gay marriages is pretty much a none issue.
I'm friends with plenty of Republicans. They all support some sort of civil unions and while they don't think it should be called marriage, none of them particulary care if it is.

A typical NJ Republican is like, "Gay marriage? Yeah, I know some gay people. Lower my property taxes, damn it!!!" We just don't have a lot of fundies around here. Our Republicans tend to be socially liberal and fiscally conservative.

15. I would imagine that a lot of Democratic volunteers
and Democratic election workers would wince at being told that they won due to luck. After all the hard work they put into these campaigns, it would be wise to congratulate them (us) on our win instead of attributing it to just luck.

8. I'm still waiting for an apology...
...from a lot of Chicken Littles. But I have a feeling we'll all be dead before that happens. If ever.
