Grey's Anatomy Star Issues Statement on 'Anti-Gay' Remarks
Edited on Thu Jan-18-07 11:08 PM by xultar
Statement of apology from Isaiah Washington regarding his recent remarks and actions at the Golden Globe Awards:
Isaiah Washington Apologizes to Lesbian and Gay Community

Jan. 18, 2007 — Statement of apology from Isaiah Washington regarding his recent remarks and actions at the Golden Globe Awards:
"I apologize to T.R., my colleagues, the fans of the show and especially the lesbian and gay community for using a word that is unacceptable in any context or circumstance. By repeating the word Monday night, I marred what should have been a perfect night for everyone who works on "Grey's Anatomy." I can neither defend nor explain my behavior. I can also no longer deny to myself that there are issues I obviously need to examine within my own soul, and I've asked for help.

I know the power of words, especially those that demean. I realize that by using one filled with disrespect, I have hurt more than T.R. and my colleagues. With one word, I've hurt everyone who has struggled for the respect so many of us take for granted. I welcome the chance to meet with leaders of the gay and lesbian community to apologize in person and to talk about what I can do to heal the wounds I've opened.

T.R.'s courage throughout this entire episode speaks to his tremendous character. I hold his talent, and T.R. as a person, in high esteem. I know a mere apology will not end this, and I intend to let my future actions prove my sincerity."

2. True. All the blogs I've read were like yeah right. If he wrote it...
We'll see but it is an apology worth noting.

21. Yeah, it's a good one, and it sounds sincere.
I hope so - I treasure seeing people change in positive ways, even though I've never watched Gay's Anatomy before.

JOKING! I kid! I know the name, but being queer I think it's safe to make the joke. :P

I've never heard a more profound and apparently heartfelt apology. He really digs deep on that one. Amazing.

I love that show and all its actors. They're all so great.

4. It's a good apology. Accepted, Isiaha.
I look forward to hearing his testimony about his problem with us gay folk and how he has grown as a human to overcome this bias. Not just the gay rags, either (Out, Advocate, etc.). How about an Oprah moment?

5. That covers the whole thing, I have to admit. Though, as Ben Franklin
is supposed to have said, "Well done is better than well said."

Though well said is a better start than nothing. I like that he didn't try to defend or explain, and admitted that the problem was in him, not in how people heard his comments or any such thing. And that he wants to change. Hopefully he means it all. My cynical side wonders if he even read the comments before his PR team released them. But for attitudes to change, people have to change, so here's hoping Isaiah Washington truly wants to be part of that change.

Wait and see, I guess.

6. Who the hell is Isaiah Washington and why should I care?
Some unknown guy who reads script on some tv show says something dumb and it is news?

Kinda like Ted Nugent played the Texas Governor's thing the other day and said a lot of stupid shit.

Who gives a f**k?

Much ado about nothing.

But I promise you (if it will make you feel better) that I will never watch that anatomy show.

Never have, never will.

and used the words AGAIN in front of the press.

The guy is nutz. I don't buy these beautiful words. I just don't because they weren't written by him. Shit, I don't even think he read them. I'm sure his agent is trying to keep his ignorant ass employed.

9. Yes, I do. He'll check into something I'm sure because I think he'll
get canned. The cast was none to happy about his stunt(s) on Monday night.

10. I'm not buying it...

He got bullied by the big heads up top and he got owned by his castmates. I think that's what happened.

13. We know he is a liar
since he denied saying the word back in October but now has tacitly admitted using the word in October. So why should we believe him now. I hope he is sincere but am not holding my breath.

14. That is what I was thinking. He lied Monday night and now he's facing
losin his job so his agent typed up this beautiful statement and sent it out.

He obviously has a serious problem. It is reported that he was telling his wife (quite loudly) in front of tons of people before they won @ the GG "I wish I was gay, gay, gay, gay...". That happened before the horrendous lie in the press room. Obviously his cast mates had enough by then and couldn't take it when he lied later on.

When I heard it I was totally disappointed that he'd started this shit up again. You just don't continue to say shit like that and not have an anti-gay bias. There's no room for that. NONE.

17. Funny thing is
this will never reach the national outrage like the remarks made by Mel Gibson or Michael Richards did.

I accept his apology but he still should be fired.

And I wouldn't trade my partner for a room full of TRs, but one can still fantasize, LOL! As Willy Loman said in Death of A Salesman, "A man's gotta have a dream..." :-)
