If you buy any book this year....
Let it be this one:

S.C. author takes on the anti-gay industry
Alvin McEwen’s new book details the Religious Right’s distortion tactics

There is a distinction between spirituality and bigotry based on “sacred” prejudices. This point is the focus of author Alvin McEwen’s new book, “Holy Bullies and Headless Monsters: Exposing the Lies of the Anti-Gay Industry.”

<snip>

“Understanding how the industry deceives people gives us a means to counter their tactics,” he says.

Misinformation

This includes taking studies out of context, purposefully misreading information, applying data to unrelated topics and other forms of abusing reputable studies by respected scientists.

<snip>

Conspiracy theories

This tactic is commonly used as the dreaded “Gay Agenda.” “By telling people that our country is a Christian country, and telling them what good Christians believe, it then becomes possible to say that someone who does not believe as you do is trying to take all that away from you,” says McEwen.

<snip>

Dire consequences

This is a strategy that seeks to predict a terrible outcome after a chain of cataclysmic events arise from some undesirable change. An example might include the claim that the Roman Empire collapsed because homosexuality became universally practiced and accepted. To further the distortion, homophobes would equate current problems in the U.S. with that completely unrelated historical situation.

1. My own favorite tactic:
"Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor."

2. LOL
I find it interesting how the RRRW thumps their Bibles about the clobber verses and how we're allegedly breaking those holy edicts while they constantly violate the 9th Commandment (among others) without a care. :rofl:

3. Have you ever tried it?
I've been using it for years. It is fantastically effective in shutting down all sorts of haters -- liberal-haters, Hillary-haters, evolution-debunkers, whiners about Wicca, and so on. It makes them have to work at their faith. And about time.

Interesting thing -- many rank-and-file fundies are becoming a LOT more progressive than their pastors. The last one I had a long conversation with was perplexed by all the anti-gay preaching from the reverends, because she said that most of the flock (i.e., most of her social world) already accepted gay folk.

Yep, times are changing ...

4. I'll try it to an extent
But if they're so deluded that they think their baloney is "the truth" it's a lost cause.

9. Thanx for the heads up!
I am going to see if my local library has it - if they don't, I'm gonna go to the used bookstore and score a copy. It seems like this will come in really useful!

Thanks!

PS - the website is also a great share! thanx!

10. Khaire and welcome to DU
I'm a bit of a Hellenic Pagan myself, though I'm practicing a weird kind of syncretism these days. :hi:

11. "The Bible speaks about homosexuality."
My response..."Yes... Love your fellow man." I could see tonsils with that one.

12. Oooo Buffy, THANKS!
I NEED this. My biggest problem as a politically active ally is that I don't think fast enough on my feet. I am OK when talking about the issues as an ally sees them but when you get into the way they throw stuff around to make their point I just don't always know what to say. I am getting better as the longer I do this the more I know how to respond but this could just really help me get better at this! YAY! Thanks, I am going to get it ASAP since the legislature is determined to cut us down this year. I will need it. :hug:
