Arkansas Voter Drive Kicked Off To Bar Gays From Adopting

A conservative social policy group launched its campaign Thursday to collect enough signatures to force a ballot measure in November to bar same-sex or unmarried opposite-sex couples from adopting or becoming foster parents in Arkansas.

"What we are doing is, we are protecting the welfare of children,” Jerry Cox, president of the Family Council Action Committee, said at a news conference at the state Capitol.

The same organization was largely responsible for the passage of an amendment to the Arkansas Constitution banning gay marriage.

The present measure would prevent a child from being adopted or placed in a foster home "if the individual seeking to adopt or to serve as a foster parent is cohabiting with a sexual partner outside of a marriage which is valid under the constitution and laws of this state."

Gay marriage legislation, flag burning constitutional amendment, abortion rulings.
That all they've got is a divisive message filled with hatred.

Most children adopted by same-sex parents are difficult to place children---older children in foster care. This is because many single mother will not select a same sex couple as a placement for their child.

Counties are literally begging for foster homes and adoptive homes for these kids.

I am a single mom who adopted a 9 year girl who had been in foster care for 5 years. She did not need two parents, she did not need heterosexual parents, she did not need gay parents. She needed a parent or parents, someone to love her, to laugh with her, to yell at her, to cry with her. She needed me.

She was physically abused by her straight parents, she was abused by straight caretakers.

She suffers from anxiety and depression because of what she went through, but on the tenth anniversary she said, "Thank you for being here to listen to my heart."

She's in college, just barely hanging in there, but she is hanging in there. And she will be a great teacher, or counselor, or day care provider, or whatever she chooses to be. And I will be there behind her (paying my parental school loans :D ).

These kids just need a parent or parents. This effort is not just anti-gay --- it is anti-kids!

Welfare of children, right.

As if they're better off in group homes? In abusive families? Bouncing around between foster homes for the rest of their childhood?
