Clinton, Obama weigh in on plight of Iranian gays
From The New York Blade:

Britain’s deportation of gay Iranians has emerged as a minor presidential campaign issue after a gay rights group asked each candidate to take a stand.

Equality Forum this month called on Sens. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.), John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Barack Obama (D-Ill.) to encourage British Prime Minister Gordon Brown to halt the deportation of gay Iranian refugees living in Britain.

Obama’s campaign, the first to respond, said in a statement Monday that the senator “believes that the United States and countries around the world have both a legal and a moral obligation to protect victims of persecution based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

Lee Feinstein, the Clinton campaign’s national security director, said Tuesday that it was tracking the case of Mehdi Kazemi, a 19-year-old gay man living in Britain who faces execution if returned to Iran.

1. And he DOES face execution. Anyone who thinks that the government of Iran is "misunderstood"
on that score needs to get a grip.

Old "I'm a Dinner Jacket" who is the spokesmodel for the Guardian Council and the Supreme Ayatullah, has made that abundantly clear.

He said "We have no gays in Iran." And they don't. Ya know why? They drive a drott crane into the town square, they attach a sturdy noose to it, they tie the hands of the gays, blindfold them, and hang them from the crane before crowds of townsfolk.

Oh, NOOOOO....that cannot BEEEEEEE! Oh, yes, it CAN: http://www.hrw.org/english/docs/2005/11/21/iran12072.htm

2. Mehdi Kazemi's case is a terrible one
If I remember the details...He came to the U.K. to study English, and obviously didn't claim assylum when he arrived. Then after some time living and studying here his former partner was arrested and executed, having named Mr. Kazemi when being questioned.

If I remember the details of the case, his application was denied because he didn't claim assylum as soon as he arrived in the U.K. - if he's sent back, the British government will be fully complicit in his torture and death.
