One rarely hears either these days... least this one doesn't. Pretty much two steps forward, I'd say.
'Alternative lifestyle'... dripped with euphemistic phoniness. Also with imprecision: what exactly is the "lifestyle" to which the 'alternative' is being presented? ( They usually meant 'generic heterosexuality' but never said so. Perhaps because this would raise more questions than it answered. i.e. non-monogamous, promiscuous or polygamous heterosexuality would have to be included in the non-alternative category. My head's spinning already.)
'Straight acting' usually meant a homo who was indistinguishable as such based on overt behavior. i.e. mannerisms, body language. In other words, someone who fell within the gender-norms mainstream in terms of overt behavior but who's sexual life fell outside of the mainstream. This included a whole bunch of people, so as a kind of short hand the term worked as a communicative tool. But it was inadequate and objectionable on numerous grounds. The most obvious: what does a 'straight' person 'act' like? If a straight person is straying outside the mainstream gender-role wise are they no longer straight? 'Course not; my goldfish can figure that one out, but the terminology suggests otherwise.
The culture conflates sexual behavior with gender. They are gradually becoming de-conflated. To the extent that this results in everyone relaxing and being who they are... or who they think they are... this is probably a good thing.
