Pope: Gay Marriage part of "Ideology of Evil"
http://reuters.myway.com/article/20050222/2005-02-22T201215Z_01_L22608092_RTRIDST_0_NEWS-POPE-BOOK-DC.html

ROME (Reuters) - Homosexual marriages are part of "a new ideology of evil" that is insidiously threatening society, Pope John Paul says in a new book published Tuesday.

....

In one section about the role of lawmakers, the Pope takes another swipe at gay marriages when he refers to "pressures" on the European Parliament to allow them.

"It is legitimate and necessary to ask oneself if this is not perhaps part of a new ideology of evil, perhaps more insidious and hidden, which attempts to pit human rights against the family and against man," he writes.

***************************************************************

In case anybody is still wondering why they discern some resentment of religion among the GLBT community. The Catholic Church is the largest denomination in the world, and we've just been called evil by its leader.

SCREAM about this again. The Pope can go straight to hell. In fact, because of his sins against homosexuals, God has been crippled in his old age. Yea, that's it.

36. I hope he dies a slow, painful death.
He's a horrible man who spreads hatred in the name of God. How much lower can a person go?

And his fear of losing power. Nothing more. Move along. People may take him seriously but if they would meet gays, they would see them as people, not demons.

4. Sorry
I don't think this is something that can be easily minimized. He speaks for almost a billion Catholics around the world, and they take what he says very seriously.

He has ensured himself a legacy of hatred and bigotry.

5. OH NO! Some old bigot thinks that homosexuals are evil!
I can't wait until the day that people wake up and realize that virtue does not come from religion. Obviously being of the cloth does not give insight as to what is moral.

To quote Nietzsche: When virtue has slept it will awake refreshed.

My message to all you young queer/questioning ones: You are perfect just the way you are. You are not evil in any way. Don't let anyone (Pope, President or Pitiful Person) diminish you or the ones you love. :hi:

8. I shudder with fear when I see those photos
The evil in their eyes. The humanity lost.

Those two women in the bottom picture (if I remember correctly) have been together for 50 years. I only hope my own evil relationship lasts as long.

Those are such beautiful photographs.

10. The founders of Daughter of Bilitis, right?
That picture should go in the main thread on this topic in LBN. It's such a beautiful picture.

Quick funny story:

A straight guy friend of mine went to a movie forum and someone said "post your lesbian photos here" (meaning porn). Well he posted a picture of Phyllis and Del holding their wedding papers and a picture of Leslie Feinberg and a link to Stone Butch Blues (much to everyone's consernation) He's an awesome guy.

34. I believe the lovely couple in the bottom picture is:
Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, pioneers in tne struggle for gay rights. Founders of the Daughters of Bilitis, one of the first gay rights groups. We, the gay community, owe a lot to these lovely people.

There are people in this world (like the pope) who espouse hate against us gay folk. But you're right, my friend....we are NOT evil, or sick.

94114_San_Francisco, I got a bit teary eyed reading your message...because it's so important. Thank you.

Edited on Wed Feb-23-05 08:27 AM by terrya
Two people, in a loving, committed relationship, are pursuing an "ideology of evil" just because they want to have their relationshop legally recognized. They're "evil".

It just fucking boggles the mind that a "man of god" would say and believe such a thing.

Why should I be surprised, though?

Because the leader of the Catholic Church and only the Catholic Church said this, it's now time for me to bash the Quakers, Unitarians, Episcopalians, Reform Jews and all those other religions too, and say THIS PROVES WHY ALL RELIGION IS EVIL!

(At least that would be par for the course on DU) :)

25. no one bashed them, cut it out.
We're sticking to the Catholic Church in this thread. Catholics, Mormons, and RW fundies in the others.

Who the hell finds quakers, unitarians, episcopalians, and reform jews (not to mention UCC) as a threat? No one. Not even the atheists who think they're incorrect about the existence of god.

Don't hijack the thread. It's about the CC.

29. Evil??
John Paul has been dying for twenty years and he's apparently living in the Middle Ages. You can be against gay marriage for religious reasons, but calling it "evil"? That is supremely ridiculous, especially since the Vatican seems more concerned with "saving" marriage than the epidemic of priests molesting children.

30. He's referred to homosexuality as "intrinsically disordered"
So, it's not a great leap for him to think of loving, legal marriage as "evil"

31. Did you all note the ironic comment by Ratzinger at the end?
"Reuters noted that Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the Vatican (news - web sites)'s top doctrinal official, dismissed the charges, saying the pope 'was not trying to put the Holocaust and abortion on the same plane' but only warning that evil lurked everywhere, 'even in liberal political systems.' "

Yeah, evil lurks everywhere alright, especially in the Vatican.

35. And I think the Pope ...
... is part of an ideology of evil.

F--- the Pope.

But you know, the Pope has no power except over the minds of those who respect him.

That's too much power.

I do not fear this Pope at all, but what about the next one?

He will be "young" (that is under 80 most likely under 70 :P ).

We'll have to deal with it pretty soon.

The next Pope will not be more liberal, but very likely will be more effective than the current geezer.

Prepare now.
