Yeah, I know. Its an old movie. The fact is, we don't get out very much and aren't all that current on popular culture.

Anyway, we watched it for the first time tonight. We both found it full of homophobic "humor". At first it seemed sorta cute. Funny. But it got old fast. At the end of the movie, it just seemed mean spirited.

And this was a big deal movie.

1. Haruka and I love that movie
It's typical Will Ferrell, though. We like all his movies.

2. In addition to being really stupid....It was full of homophobic gags.
But, really, a good number of mainstream movies, particularly those aimed of "Blades of Glory"'s market, generally are full of homophobic "jokes."

4. Didn't see it, despite my interest in skating.
I suppose my interest in skating is equally matched by my disinterest in Ferrell.

5. Haven't seen it. Won't see it.
Can't stand Will Ferrell.

The new crop of "geniuses" of comedy makes my skin crawl, personally.

6. I have not seen it.
If it is homophobic I don't think I will view it.

7. Why am I not surprised that "Blades of Glory" is homophobic?
Seems like just about any film in which Will Ferrell or Adam Sandler star are obligated to toss in homophobic jokes. Sandler's "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry" was particularly offensive for wallowing in the worst homophobic "humor" throughout, then trying to justify it all with a "defense" of gay marriage that was totally at odds with the rest of the movie.

8. Wasn't PC at all but....
then again I'm not required to support WF's movies but only to support his right to make them. Thank Dog for choice, tolerance and the Supremes. Did really like "Old School" tho...

9. I didn't, but I did see Talladega Nights
which I thought was hilarious!!

it's interesting, since the two movies from everything I've heard have the same type of humor, that Blades would come off as homophobic whereas Talladega comes off as accepting. there's "OMGGAY" humor in Talladega, but it's played straight (sic), no people making gross comments or faces, just two men in an extremely heterosexual environment doing homosexual things.

maybe it's just because I grew up in a conservative area which was not too accepting of gays but that loved NASCAR and I found the film to be a delicious form of revenge, but I do think that Talladega overall has a strong pro-gay message.

10. Wasn't offended by anything homophobic, but I was offended by
it being so cheaply and lazily made...could have been really funny, but went for the formula.

I will say that I expected Jon Heder's character to be gay...they certainly made him sort of gay only to throw in the love interest. I mean, come on, 2 male figure skaters and NEITHER is gay???

13. I mean
the shtick of the movie is that it mixes homophobia, homoeroticism, and a bit of anti-homophobia (there's at least one scene which *really* mocks phobes).

Part of it offended me, yes, but then I realized that it was just Will Ferrell, and I decided not to care.
