"Spain’s journey to the altar A gay man once jailed celebrates the new Spain" is in the March 1 issue, but not online.
It tells of how a 17-year-old, in 1976, was jailed after a nun ratted him out to the police. The police tortured him and allowed three prisoners to rape him because he would not rat out other gays.
He only spent 3 months in jail, but in 1995, during a traffic stop, a cop pointed and said that one is a faggot. The police still had records. This man has worked to change the situation in Spain and now looks forward to Spain approving same-sex marriage rights.
Even though the famous Spanish dictator Franco died in 1975, the Catholic dogmatic anti-gay laws persisted until 1979. An estimated 5000 people were jailed for being homosexuals. --- I suspect that the Pope's recent rants are being driven by Spain's plans to allow gay marriage.
