Barack Obama Opposes Prop 8, the anti-marriage amendment
In a letter to the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club, Sen. Barack Obama stated his opposition to the California constitutional amendment. As far as I know, this is the first official mention of such a position.

Incidentally, the Alice Pride Breakfast was an amazing success. I'll have pictures up from the Alice Breakfast and Leno Pride 2008 up soon.

Check the letter out over the flip...
Brian Leubitz :: Barack Obama Opposes Prop 8, the anti-marriage amendment

Dear Friends,

Thank you for the opportunity to welcome everyone to the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club's Pride Breakfast and to congratulate you on continuing a legacy of success, stretching back thirty-six years. As one the oldest and most influential LGBT organizations in the country, you have continually rallied to support Democratic candidates and causes, and have fought tirelessly to secure equal rights and opportunities for LGBT Americans in California and throughout the country.

As the Democratic nominee for President, I am proud to join with and support the LGBT community in an effort to set our nation on a course that recognizes LGBT Americans with full equality under the law. That is why I support extending fully equal rights and benefits to same sex couples under both state and federal law. That is why I support repealing the Defense of Marriage Act and the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy, and the passage of laws to protect LGBT Americans from hate crimes and employment discrimination. And that is why I oppose the divisive and discriminatory efforts to amend the California Constitution, and similar efforts to amend the U.S. Constitution or those of other states.

For too long. issues of LGBT rights have been exploited by those seeking to divide us. It's time to move beyond polarization and live up to our founding promise of equality by treating all our citizens with dignity and respect. This is no less than a core issue about who we are as Democrats and as Americans.

Finally, I want to congratulate all of you who have shown your love for each other by getting married these last few weeks. My thanks again to the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club for allowing me to be a part of today's celebration. I look forward to working with you in the coming months and years, and I wish you all continued success.

Sincerely,

s

Barack Obama

1. ... to a narrowly defined special interest group
We are told to remain quiet when he makes non-supportive remarks when speaking to conservative or religious groups because he is merely "pandering to a special interest." Why should we take these comments at face value?

I will believe that this is his real, actual position when these comments are affirmed on CNN, in Time magazine or as part of his published campaign platform. And if he utters the phrase "let the states decide" or "marriage is for one man and one woman" just once from this point, I will be among the first to call this letter a lie.

3. Agreed!
But for now, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt (only).

5. And I also want to add: Note what he is NOT saying
He is NOT disavowing his oft-repeated sentiment that "marriage is for one man and one woman." He is NOT disavowing his stated views that states should be allowed whether or not to extend fundamental human rights to same-sex couples.

What has changed, really?

2. I think this is big.
With Obama capturing the 18 -24 vote and getting more people in that age group registered, this is significant. People in that age group support same-sex marriage by a signficant majority. If Obama can get those voters in the voting booths in November, in California, they'll oppose Amendment 8...and help to defeat it.

6. That is a good point terrya.
I still do not trust or like Obama, not one little bit, but I do agree with you how this statement made now might very well affect the vote in California.

7. We'll see
He needs to tell voters who are not LGBT the same thing. As there is an almost total news blackout on gay issues or news, we'll see how far this goes. So far he has my vote, but Prop 8 will be a knock down , drag out squabble this Nov., and we will need active support from Dems of all stripes.

9. Your governor opposes it, Obama opposes it.
I think there's an excellent chance of it being defeated.

I'm contributing to Equality California to do my fair share...I live in Illinois, but I can sure open my checkbook for it. :-)
