Straight Pride Parade to be Held in New York City
Although reggae is known for its militancy and its resistance to injustice, the reggae community has remained calm throughout the attack on the music by Peter Tatchell and other Gay activists groups. Rather than going on the offense, the reggae community will instead unite in solidarity a day prior to labor day in New York City.

(PRWEB) July 7, 2008 -- TCOOO Productions the label behind the "18 Karat Reggae" CD series is holding the first ever Straight Pride Parade in Brooklyn, New York on August 31, 2008. The parade will take place on Eastern Parkway along the same route as the annual Caribbean labor day parade.

New reggae / dancehall sensation Jango Fresh said, "the Straight pride parade is a great idea because when a song like "Hit them hard" by my label mate Stapler can be banned just because it stresses the importance of a male and a female in every family, it is a sign that heterosexuals need to wake up.

The Straight Pride Parade is a chance for Heterosexuals to gather together and proudly embrace their sexuality. The Parade will also allow reggae and dancehall fans who are in New York City for the Labor Day celebrations to get together and celebrate reggae, dancehall and family in love and unity. Adults are encouraged to bring their children along for the celebrations, as the event will be family oriented.

5. Pride is the deadliest of the seven deadly sins.
Edited on Wed Jul-09-08 01:32 PM by jobycom
The medieval minds believed that all crimes resulted from an excess of pride--murder, theft, covetousness, everything, resulted from the criminal believing he or she was better than the law, or the rights of others.

That's different than someone who has been persecuted refusing to feel shame for that which they are being persecuted. That's often called pride, but it's more of a refusal to feel shame. Black Pride, Gay Pride, Latino Pride, Gray Pride... these aren't displays of arrogance, these are refusals to bow to a majority who tries to force shame on them. It is a cry for equality, not a cry for superiority.

True pride is when someone claims superiority. An individual who kills, abuses, attacks, robs, cheats, lies, steals--name your sin--believes they are superior to the victim, or superior to the law, or whatever. That's Pride of the classic "Seven Deadly Sins" sort. For a group that has never suffered oppression, has never been forced to feel shame for their basic identity or for some characteristic of their basic identity, to have a Pride festival, is that same type of Pride. It's not a statement of equality, it's a statement of superiority; not of inclusion of themselves, but of exclusion of others.

That's what all these "Straight Pride" type movements (White Pride, Male Pride, American Pride, and variations of these) are--displays of superiority, of exclusion, of intolerance. Pride of the deadliest of the Seven Deadly Sins variety.

(Edited for better grammar, second paragraph.)

6. The reggae community *may* be known for its resistance to injustice, but it's also known

for its BLANTANT HOMOPHOBIA! Jamaica, birthplace of Marley and reggae, is probably the most homophobic country on the planet. Yes, in reggae they sing about Jah, and ganja and killing faggots. Don't believe me? Do a few searches. There is some violent, homophobic reggae shit about hurting "chi-chi boys."

22. it breaks my heart
the activists of the 1960's would be appalled by their successors.

when I was a kid, I dreamt of visiting places one day, and Jamaica was high on my list... Egypt at number one. but unless the attitudes change, I cannot see ever going.

23. I too wanted to visit Jamaica and started doing a bit of research.
What I learned about the rampant homophobia appalled me. The violence and brutality against anyone and everyone EVEN PERCEIVED to be gay or lesbian is horrendous. Murders, maimings, vicious attacks, burnings...the list goes on and on and on. It literally is as though the nation of Jamaica has accepted homophobia and virulent violence against gays and lesbians as some type of national cultural personae. I do not understand.

9. A Straight Pride Parade? Why?
Edited on Wed Jul-09-08 01:49 PM by BattyDem
Are heterosexuals having a problem?

I have never been harassed, intimidated or discriminated against because I'm straight. Not once.

I bet that no one marching in the parade has ever been harassed, intimidated or discriminated against because of their heterosexuality. So ... why don't they call it what it really is? "A Bigot Pride Parade" :eyes:

Anyone would be motivated to attend this.

It's hard enough to get people out to demonstrate on an issue that's important to them, let alone something that's not even an issue.

18. I know. They're great slogans.
It's killing me right now that I will be out of town at a wedding the day of the 'march'.

I previously organized two successful counter-demonstrations (against Phelps) and this one would have been a pleasure to organize and execute.

19. The subtext is that the lobbying and activism have kicked ass...
>>>>>>>Some dancehall/ragga artists have been criticised for homophobia<8><9>, sometimes including threats of violence.<10> Buju Banton's song "Boom Bye-Bye" states that gays "haffi dead" ("have to die"). Other dancehall artists who have been accused of homophobia include Elephant Man ("When you hear a lesbian getting raped/ It's not our fault ... Two women in bed/ That's two Sodomites who should be dead."), Bounty Killer (who in a song urges listeners to burn "Mister Fagoty") and Beenie Man.

The controversy surrounding anti-gay lyrics led to the cancellation of UK tours by Beenie Man and Sizzla. After lobbying from the Stop Murder Music coalition, the dancehall music industry agreed in 2005 to stop releasing songs that promote hatred and violence against gay people.<11><12> In June 2007, Beenie Man, Sizzla and Capleton signed up to the Reggae Compassionate Act — in a deal brokered with top dancehall promoters and Stop Murder Music activists — renouncing homophobia, and agreeing to "not make statements or perform songs that incite hatred or violence against anyone from any community". Five artists who had been targeted by the anti-homophobia campaign did not sign up to the act, including Elephant Man, TOK, Bounty Killa, Vybz Kartel and Buju Banton.<13>>>>>
(from wiki.)

....and that these sexual Nazis are, it would appear, on the ropes. Only desperation could spawn such a nutty idea.

But what it is about Reggae ( and Jamaican culture?) that foster this mentality?

Most peculiar.

28. Seriously, what is with these people?
I hate it when people moan about, "Well, if you can have gay pride, why can't you have straight pride, or white pride?"

Give me a break. Every week is straight (and for that matter, white) pride week. It's not like we aren't constantly bombarded with heterosexuality all the time. Really, I don't get why all these folks get their panties in a twist over us having one bloody week to say we're proud to be who we are.
