Mamma Mia! Shameless Gushing Here.
Edited on Mon Jul-21-08 06:51 PM by David Zephyr
This weekend in Palm Springs, Carlos and I took in the film version of the musical "Mamma Mia" and the verdict? It's wonderful.

The audience was singing all of the songs and even dancing in the aisles. I can't wait to see it again and again!

ABBA and Meryl Streep! Sell your house and go see the film. Do it now. :hi:

1. But they didn't include ABBA's best song
"The Visitors" (1981). Phooey.

2. I wish they could have woven in every ABBA song into the story.
Still, great film and Meryl was amazing. :hi:

5. Singing and dancing?...No blood, explosions and gunfire?
No killing people in the desert?...don't the producers know it is wartime. McCain is issuing a statement I am sure.

6. I saw it yesterday!
It was a fantastic movie! My GF and I were singing along to most of the songs, but very quietly, as nobody else in the theater was.

7. Hopefully I will get to it
soon. I wanted to see the Broadway show while in NYC but had to chose carefully since I only had time for 2 shows and I did not think my husband would care for it. He has said he will go with me if I go see that new Batman movie with him. I know we will get to Batman because he is angling to get there this weekend so I hope Mama Mia is here long enough to see it. Ah well, it will be on TV if I don't make it. Glad to know it is getting lots of attention.

I am so happy to see more musicals coming through the theaters these days. When you live where I do it is like living in a place that barely recognizes that musicals exist and when they do they have to change them all around so as not to cause any discomfort (Cabaret caused walk outs because people did not know it had gays in it!).

9. Go see MAMMA MIA by yourself!!
You don't need "hubby" to go with you!! My gosh!!

I'm woman....hear me roar. If I wanna see MAMMA MIA, well then I'll do it.

It was a WONDERFUL MOVIE. I've seen it 2 times. First with my husband (and he loved it) and with my sister.

The best part is Dancing Queen. The "woman's song"

10. I Was Disappointed.
I'm a big Abba fan, and I like Meryl Streep, but I thought she was miscast here. Musical comedy is not her forte. For an actress known for her understated performances, she was so over-the-top in this that I was literally cringing through all of her numbers, most especially during "Winner Takes It All". The show itself was awkward; some of the songs fit nicely, but most felt shoe-horned in. I've never seen the theatrical production, and now I'm kind of glad I didn't waste my money, although I'll bet that the Broadway production was much better than the movie. Even Christine Baranski didn't work for me here, and I'd normally pay to hear her sing the phone book. I did enjoy her "Does Your Mother Know" bit, though.

I was very disappointed with most of the singing, except for Christine, Amanda Seyfried, and Dominic Cooper (who's got a HOT little bod). I wish that they would have hired better singers with smaller names. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry during "S.O.S." I will live the rest of my life quite happily if I never have to hear Pierce Brosnan sing again.

13. Have seen it twice now!
And I know it's not gonna win any Oscars, :hi: but I enjoyed it! The scenery was absolutely breathtaking (both the island and its male inhabitants)! And I love Meryl Streep, and Christine Baranski rocks! The story is silly and some of the songs don't fit, but it was entertaining and a lovely way to pass an evening. My only complaint: while all the male/female couples were kissing and groping and rolling in the surf, all poor Colin Firth and his boytoy got was one lousy hug!! Why couldn't they have at least locked lips in that scene when everyone else was kissing?? The producers of this surely knew they'd have a large gay audience!
