Castration law for Swedish transgenders
A new proposal to introduce castration as a prerequisite for those undergoing gender reassignment surgery in Sweden has been met with outrage by a leading gay and transgender rights organization.

Today, those undergoing gender reassignment surgery in order to achieve sex change usually complement their surgery with hormone treatment.

A side-effect of the hormone treatment is natural sterilization.

However, hormone treatments may be broken off, whether permanently or short-term, allowing for the possibility of pregnancy, as was the case of a British transgender “man” who got pregnant this year.

The new legislation would prevent a pregnancy altogether by making castration obligatory – testicles or ovaries would be taken out in an operation.

1. The only explanation for this I can understand is
that they are trying to compete with the US for the dumbass government of the year award.

Whoever decided they need to impose unnecessary medical surgeries on unwilling participants for their own political purposes needs to lose their license to practice medicine/law/politics/participation in human society.

2. Removal of the ovaries has some significant health effects.
Iirc, a huge increase bone loss, among other things. Choosing to do it should be a person's informed medical decision, and is between them and their specialist.

Also, what the hell is the definition of sex change surgery? If I'm not mistaken most FTMs don't do bottom surgery (for the very good reason that the results aren't functional or cosmetically satisfactory) so depending on the definition they could be obligated to do a oophyrectomy in order to get their breasts removed. Which is just stupid, since plenty of female-identified women have mastectomies and nobody insists on having them desexed.

4. My son is FtM and would very much like to have
a complete hysterectomy and oophorectomy. Those organs continue to produce hormones, remember. It's not "bottom surgery" in that sense - not like external surgeries to simulate the look of a penis and scrotum (btw - the new methods for metoidioplasty are actually pretty effective, functional and cosmetically acceptable). It's actually more of a health risk to keep the parts, as the introduction of higher male hormones increases the risk of developing endometrial cancer and possibly ovarian cancer. Plus the high unpleasantness of regular "female exams" when you are FtM.

My kid doesn't want female parts; he doesn't identify as a female. Unfortunately, insurance won't cover it and he can't afford to do it. The man that chose to get pregnant identifies as something "other", I think - neither fully male nor fully female. That's his choice, but from what I understand (which is only what I know from talking to my son and his transgender friends) that is not a common outlook.

I don't disagree that it should be a decision made by the person in consultation with their physician - just wanted to point out that there are good reasons why an FtM would want to get rid of those parts.

5. so. if they get tg'd all the way in say, Norway.
Will they be apprehended at the border on the way back in and de-pinkparted?

Are they allowed to store eggs or sperm?

How far does this proposed law go? If they do store eggs or sperm in a country other than Sweden, are they criminals in Sweden?

You can always always tell a hate-filled-conservative-proposed law by the fact that it doesn't address consequence in any fashion. It's just a shot across the bow indicating the haters are still alive and not doing so well fucking up their own lives.
