Saw the No on 8 Sign

It turned out to be an older lady in her 70s.

She wasn't on the canvassing list but if your going to knock a Republican door your not going to pass a "no on 8" door.

Thanked her.

She said she had recently gone to a wedding ceremony for a couple of 23 years that were dear friends of hers.

They asked all of their guests not to bring any presents but make a donation to "no on 8".

They had signs for everyone to take home.

As she told the story her voice got tighter and she had to look away. I saw through her prescription sun glasses that her eyes were filled with tears.

I pretended I had something in my eye and managed to side track it before it dropped on my cheek.

After a minute we looked at each other and smiled and I went on to the next house although I had to fiddle around a bit so that the telltale signs would recede and I could approach it with an unaffected face.

I've met many of them, most, from Brokaw's (fuck him), 'Greatest Generation'. They truly are incredible people. If you've never had an in-length, in-depth conversation from someone who is 70 years or older, you have not lived. Granted, there are many who are close minded, but you will find many diamonds amongst the coal with this group.
