L.A. Film Festival Director Donated Money to Yes on 8
Source: The Advocate

Los Angeles Film Festival director Richard Raddon turned up on the secretary of state's donation list as having given money to Yes on 8, backing the California ballot measure that banned same-sex marriage throughout the state.

Movie City News blogger David Poland turned up the $1,500 donation Wednesday morning on the California secretary of state's website. Raddon is a Mormon and the producer of a number of independent films, including the Lili Taylor-Guy Pearce movie A Slipping-Down Life.

1. Wow. I bet most of these people had no idea their donations would be public knowledge.
This is a good thing. We really can get a sense of those who say one thing but do another.

2. No Way. Do you know Hollywood would look like without
Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender people? It would be empty. There would be fewer directors, writers, actors, actresses, sound and video engineers, gaffers, musicians. It would be a ghost down. How ridiculous and sad.

Time to fix this idiocy.

3. And they need to publish the names
of everyone who signed the petition to get in on the ballot.

1. If people know their names will be published, they'll think twice about supporting hate measures.

2. We may uncover thousands of names of people who didn't really sign the petition and whose names were forged.

4. As a film fan, this especially saddens me.
I hope this guy is forced to resign.

I'm sorry, but I don't have patience for bigots right now. And anyone who contributed to this is a bigot as far as I'm concerned.

7. I am so NOT surprised.
Major passive homophobia in the straight film fest circuit. Very much a straight boy network.

11. Is having your name published like not having a secret vote?
An answer to my own question:

No, because by giving money, you are skewing the vote to the position held by the richest, not just a single vote.

OTOH, having your name published because you sign a petition would seem to be a violation of that principle.

So, I guess I come down on publishing contributions, but keeping petition signers confidential.

I'd be interested in others views.

15. I think that political petitions are matters of public record.
Votes are totally different, as you point out.

Any political actions, however, are a matter of public record. Contributions to political causes, signatures on petitions, all these things have to be public record or else the system can be totally abused. Anyone can go read petitions once they are filed in the county courthouse.

Bottom line. Don't contribute to a cause or sign a petition that you wouldn't want your friends to know you support.

14. Many Mormons are publicly disagreeing with their church's actions on this.
Being part of a church doesn't mean marching lockstep with leadership. Just as in a democracy, being a voluntary member of a group means questioning leadership and the choices that leadership make.

Many Mormons don't agree with their church's bigoted actions, and they're saying so. This guy chose to go along with the bigotry and even support it.

18. justice will be enough, thank you (though an apology would be nice too).
churches have already spilled enough blood by encouraging bigotry and hate. we just want to coexist peacefully, and be accorded the same rights and respect due any american citizen.

29. The first woman I fell in love with (though she was straight)...
...was a film major at UCLA and then worked in the industry.

She once said that when talking to others about what her field is like, and what the people she works with are like, etc, she would tell them, "If you want to go into the film/television business, you can't be homophobic, and you can't be anti-Semitic; if you're either (or both), you should forget about a career in film, cause you won't make it." (She was Jewish, btw).

Looks like Richard Raddon (and perhaps others?) needs to be reminded of this...
