Fundies are bad, but not the whole problem.

Homophobia is part of the general culture.

Even totally secular people may be homophobes.

The junior Mafia types who are nominally Catholic are not motivated by religion.

In "blue states" homophobia is rampant. It ain't just fundies in "red states" people!

I grew up in the supposedly gay friendly East Village (NYC) and I was regularly beaten up for being a "faggot" by the junior Mafia.

1. Do you think any other group has quite the fundies' moralizing to it?
Whenever I see moralizing in books, on TV, and over the radio about why and how homosexuality is wrong, it comes from the religious right. I don't doubt that there is a world of bigots out there, of every variety and motiviation and stripe. But they are, for the most part, inarticulate, incohesive, and incapable of elevating their bigotry to the political stage. They are a danger in the back alley, but not on the floor of the House or on the bench. The religious right is the political danger. Or so it seems to me.

2. fundies' moralizing
Do I think any other group has quite the fundies' moralizing to it?

No I don't. But when it comes to homophobia I don't think that fundies are the determining factor, at least not where I have lived in the "blue states".

Homophobia is deeply ingrained in our culture, and fundies are only an outcropping.

We need to work on more than just fighting fundies.

Though fighting fundies is part of the deal.

Your friends and neighbors, not religious screwballs and not enemies, need to be convinced.
