Advocate: pope hated gays so much he violated U.S. election laws

During the American presidential campaign of 2004, we saw George W. Bush travel to the Vatican and, with hat in hand, ask the pope to have his bishops help him win election. True to form, the “red hats” of the American church chimed in shortly thereafter with a continuing babble of antigay rhetoric and pastoral pronouncements in an attempt to retain the antigay president—a clear violation of American laws that grant churches billions of dollars in tax-free privileges on the condition that they stay out of electoral politics.

3. Bull
Does anyone think Bush had to go to the Vatican to enlist the Pope in his camp? Would this be before or after JP2 denounced the Iraq invasion? The Church has a long history of homophobia and claiming that something "special" was laid on to help Dubya is just childish.

4. Actually as head of a sovereign nation
the Pope is/was not subject to our laws. I also don't believe he did anything to help out Bush. Their views coincided on gays and diverged on Iraq. The Advocate needs better editing at times.

6. Bush not the Pope violated the election laws ...
... and not just by getting some priests to electioneer for him.

Hell, Clinton sometimes gave speeches in churches, but he never stole an election.
