Knee Replacement Patients Thrive, (20-year follow-up) Study Says
20-Year Follow-up Study Finds Most Patients Active Into Later Years
http://www.webmd.com/pain-management/news/20110216/knee-replacement-patients-thrive-study-says

"Knee replacement patients tend to remain active 20 years after their surgery, despite some age-related declines, according to a new survey of 128 patients.

"If you have a good knee replacement and are blessed with good health, you have an excellent chance of walking as much as you want and doing activities such as swimming, golfing, and riding a bike, into your 80s," researcher John B. Meding, MD, tells WebMD.

He is presenting his findings this week at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) in San Diego.

The study, based on evaluations of patients cared for by Meding's group practice in Mooresville, Ind., was launched because of patient concerns about how well they will function several years after the original surgery and whether they will need revision surgery.

I'm actually quite surprised by the results of this study, but, if I need a knee, someday...

4. Good news for knee replacements...
as long as it was a quality replacement. Not all orthopedic surgeons are good. Best to have someone do the replacement who has done a lot of them.

I hope they do a study on shoulder replacement. I had my right shoulder replaced November 2009. I was back to hitting the tennis balls at 4 month and at 6 months doing serves and overheads. What helped me was the quality of my surgeon and that he set up my rehabilitation to get back to tennis.

6. My mother, as well as several other people I know/knew, had problems
after knee surgery. It is major surgery and shouldn't be taken lightly.
