The Effects of Lipoic Acid on Glycaemic Control in Type 2 Diabetes
This study is currently recruiting participants.
Verified on October 2010 by University of Edinburgh

First Received on November 13, 2006. Last Updated on November 5, 2010 History of Changes
Sponsor: University of Edinburgh
Collaborator: NHS Lothian
Information provided by: University of Edinburgh
ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT00398892
Purpose

Hypothesis: that lipoic acid supplements taken orally will improve control of blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.

This study will recruit 18 people with type 2 diabetes, whose diabetes is currently managed on oral agents. Each subject will then either take placebo for 12 weeks followed by lipoic acid for 12 weeks, or lipoic acid followed by placebo.

A blood test for overall diabetes control will be taken at the start and end of each 12 week period, and the change in control will be compared for lipoic acid vs placebo.

Condition Intervention Phase
Diabetes Mellitus, Type 2
Drug: Lipoic acid
Phase II

Study Type: Interventional
Study Design: Allocation: Randomized
Endpoint Classification: Safety/Efficacy Study
Intervention Model: Crossover Assignment

The Effect of A-lipoic Acid (ALA) on Fatty Acid-induced Impairment of Glucose-stimulated Insulin Secretion
This study is not yet open for participant recruitment.
Verified on December 2009 by University Health Network, Toronto

First Received on December 17, 2009. Last Updated on January 22, 2010 History of Changes
Sponsor: University Health Network, Toronto
Collaborator: Canadian Diabetes Association
Information provided by: University Health Network, Toronto
ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT01056497
Purpose

Chronically elevated free fatty acids impair insulin sensitivity and insulin secretion (ie lipotoxicity) by a combination of oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and inflammation. This study will test whether alpha-lipoic acid, which has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, prevents or ameliorates lipotoxicity.

Condition Intervention Phase
Type 2 Diabetes
Prediabetes
Drug: alpha lipoic acid
Phase IV

Study Type: Interventional
Study Design: Allocation: Randomized
Endpoint Classification: Efficacy Study
Intervention Model: Crossover Assignment
Masking: Single Blind (Subject)
Primary Purpose: Basic Science
Official Title: The Effect of A-lipoic Acid (ALA) on Fatty Acid-induced Impairment of Glucose-stimulated Insulin Secretion

3. And another.... they had better be using a time released quality formula and not some
Wally World instantly absorbed crap in order to eff up the results. BTW, every diabetic vitamin supplement in WW has thioctic acid in it to a very small degree, not enough to say so imho.

Dose Ranging Study of the Effects of Alpha Lipoic Acid on Oxidative Stress
This study is currently recruiting participants.
Verified on March 2009 by Johns Hopkins University

First Received on March 4, 2009. Last Updated on May 27, 2010 History of Changes
Sponsor: Johns Hopkins University
Collaborator: Jarrow Formulas Inc
Information provided by: Johns Hopkins University
ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT00857376
Purpose

Heart disease is the most common cause of death in the United States and it is commonly found in people with diabetes and high cholesterol. Inflammation is one mechanism by which diabetes and elevated cholesterol damage blood vessels. Inflammation can be increased by oxidative stress. This study will see if Alpha Lipoic acid, a potent antioxidant and over the counter product, reduces blood levels of markers of oxidative stress and inflammation when compared with placebo. Placebo is a substance that looks like the real product, but contains no active product.

Condition Intervention Phase
Metabolic Syndrome
Dietary Supplement: Alpha lipoic acid at 3 doses compared to placebo
Phase II

Study Type: Interventional
Study Design: Allocation: Randomized
Intervention Model: Parallel Assignment
Masking: Double Blind (Subject, Investigator, Outcomes Assessor)
Official Title: Dose Ranging Study of the Effects of Alpha Lipoic Acid on Oxidative Stress

4. I used to think 'what a deal' join some experimental drug course
but nowadays, when I hear all the drug commercials with side effects that are worse than the disease I wonder...did those fatal effects turn up during the human drug trials? shiite! no drug trials for me!

5. Interesting name.... thioctic acid "Lipoic Acic" used to be sourced from potatoes, until
the legendary perceived benefits of it pushed it into the spotlight. Then Italy built a facility to produce it by the ton. I have this book, perhaps you would like it, perhaps not.

Five Star Rating btw.

Alpha Lipoic Acid Breakthrough: The Superb Antioxidant That May Slow Aging, Repair Liver Damage, and Reduce the Risk of Cancer, Heart Disease, and Diabetes

I began taking a-lipoic acid and achieving great results before this book was published. It was encouraging to finally read a book that validated my experience with lipoic acid. This book explains a-lipoic acid in layman's terms and sheds light on the value of this nutrient. As a Type I diabetic of 36 years, I have essentially reversed diabetic neuropathy by taking 900 mg of a-lipoic acid per day. I highly encourage diabetics to research a-lipoic acid especially if suffering from neuropathy. This book is a great start.

8. I could explain to you what happened for an associate of mine way back when he added
GTF chromium, 30 to 40 grams of fiber, digestive enzymes with pancreatin and time released lipoic to his regimen but that would be a violation of board rules. I will not answer in a pm either. Another option you have is to read at www.lef.org here is a direct link to an area of concern.

http://www.lef.org/protocols/metabolic_health/diabetes_01.htm
It is crucial that diabetics (and those predisposed to diabetes) understand the ways in which blood glucose causes damage and take active steps to interrupt these processes. The most notorious process is glycation, the same process that causes food to brown in an oven. Glycation (defined as sugar molecules reacting with proteins to produce nonfunctional structures in the body) is a key feature of diabetes-related complications because it compromises proteins throughout the body and is linked to nerve damage, heart attack, and blindness.

Oxidative stress is also central to the damage caused by diabetes. Diabetics suffer from high levels of free radicals that damage arteries throughout the body, from the eyes to the heart. Once again, it is important that diabetics understand their need for antioxidant therapy to help reduce oxidative stress and lower the risk of diabetic complications.

Not sure what the point of saying anyone might be interested in applying was.

10. I was referring to the trials that state "now recruiting"... if they have already completed
and still have the now recruiting statement that is their bad, not mine. I trust the results were somewhat positive... care to share?

11. Admittedly, it says '*Estimated* Study Completion Date'
So I suppose this may mean that since the study start date (Dec 2009) they still haven't managed to recruit enough subjects to do it (they wanted 18 or so). I would have no idea of the results. But since it was in Livingston, and was only for people with Type 2 diabetes, it's very unlikely anyone on DU would have been able to take part anyway.

12. This is true, however people who may view the results, who may have a doc guiding them
who may have his eyes open might be interested in doing a little trial of their own.
