Baby Formula Bottles Often Toxic
http://medheadlines.com/2008/04/16/baby-formula-bottles-often-toxic/

The chemical Bisphenol A (BPA), widely used to make plastic packaging products, has just been declared toxic enough to be linked to a host of severe developmental and reproductive disorders common all across the United States. Breast and prostate cancers and premature puberty are some of the disorders associated with exposure to BPA.

On April 15, the National Toxicology Program (NTP) reversed the opinion reached by an earlier panel that declared BPA a safe element for plastic packaging, even when it’s used in packaging foods and beverages. At the time of that ruling, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and other like-minded organizations charged deliberate misrepresentation by industry contractors trying to hijack BPA’s evaluation process.

A second inquiry, coming from the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, was instrumental in getting the reevaluation NTP announced today. The government committee inquiry led to the firing of the industry contractor, Sciences International, that conducted the first evaluation, which was overturned today.

Several months ago, members of EWG contacted officials at every major infant formula manufacturing company and learned that all of them use BPA as a lining for the metal parts of all containers that package liquid and powdered infant formulas.

1. None of us
should be using plastic bottles anymore. Plastic-lined travel coffee mugs are especially prone to leaching BPA because of the hot beverages used in them. Please go and buy a metal water bottle or travel coffee mug. I use a Sigg water bottle and my wife uses a Klean Kanteen bottle. Both brands are made of metal, do not contain BPA, and are sold on amazon.com and in lots of retail locations.

4. Agreed. It's pretty obvious that liquids for consumption
should not be in contact with plastic.

2. I have an interim home for newborn babies

70 babies have come here for their first love and care. I use only glass bottles and when the child is adopted at 17 days old I send 2 bottles in the layette.

I was preparing for a new baby last week and discovered I only have 12 bottles left - I have searched everywhere for new ones.
Does anyone know if they've taken them off the market?

5. When I'm looking for things like that, I try in the Amish areas

around locally (for me that would be PA, Ohio, and lower Delaware). It looks like Natural Baby has some available online. They were the Evenflo® Sensitive Response™ Clear Glass Bottle. When I 'googled' "glass baby bottles" they were the 3rd or 4th link down.

Ooooh, also found something called a "Wee Go" from Thingamababy that is a glass bottle with a silicone sleeve to give it some protection.

6. I use Born Free.
They say specifically on the box that they are BPA free.

And they are also sold at Whole Foods.

8. Doesn't seem like so much of a slam dunk, according to the NTP
The paper is available here: http://cerhr.niehs.nih.gov/chemicals/bisphenol/BPADraftBriefVF_04_14_08.pdf

Here's one snippet:

Are Current Exposures to Bisphenol A High Enough to Cause Concern?

Possibly. The “high” dose effects of bisphenol A in laboratory animals that provide clear evidence for adverse effects on development, i.e., reduced survival, birth weight, and growth of offspring early in life, and delayed puberty in female rats and male rats and mice, are observed at levels of exposure that far exceed those encountered by humans. However, estimated exposures in pregnant women and fetuses, infants, and children are similar to levels of bisphenol A associated with several “low” dose laboratory animal findings of effects on the brain and behavior, prostate and mammary gland development, and early onset of puberty in females. When considered together, these findings provide limited evidence that bisphenol A has adverse effects on development (Figure 2b).

9. Great! Let's keep making baby bottles and Brita filters out of them!
And keep lining all of our aluminum cans with them as well!

10. No need to be snarky.
I merely pointed out that the tone that the article took was at odds with the NTP statement.
