Fish oil helps patients with chronic heart failure
MUNICH, Germany - Fish oil supplements may work slightly better than a popular cholesterol-reducing drug to help patients with chronic heart failure, according to new research released Sunday.

"This reinforces the idea that treating patients with heart failure takes more than just drugs," Juanatey said.
--------
Comparing the results from both studies, the researchers concluded that fish oil is slightly more effective than the drug because the oil performed better against a placebo than did Crestor.

"It's a small benefit, but we should always be emphasizing to patients what they can do in terms of diet that might help," said Dr. Richard Bonow, chief of cardiology at Northwestern University Hospital in Chicago and past president of the American Heart Association.

2. It's my understanding that you need a combo
of flax seed oil, borage oil and a couple of others to cover all the omega 3 fatty acids bases.

Some cursory research will probably turn that info up.

3. it's my understanding that fish oil is a more direct way
of getting Omega 3's...flax oil requires a conversion in the body that some people's systems can't do efficiently.

4. Nutrition can have absolutely no effect on health. Period.
Edited on Tue Sep-02-08 11:15 AM by HamdenRice
Haven't you heard the "scientific" gospel? There is absolutely nothing you can do in terms of diet to affect your health. Eating a strict diet of Mickey D's Big Macs and fries causes exactly the same health outcome as eating a balanced diet including plenty of fruit, vegetables, complex carbohydrates and omega 3 fatty acids (found in fish oil). BTW, Morgan Spurlock is a liar.

Anyone who says otherwise, even if he or she is a research scientist who has carried out a double blind study or statistical study and published the data and conclusions in a peer reviewed medical journal, is an "anti-science" woo woo.

Also it is morally reprehensible to attribute any health outcome a person experiences to any choices a person makes, including choices as to what to eat. If you do, then you want all sick people to die.

Fish oil capsules are a form of food supplement, like vitamins, which means that they are manufactured by dangerous, unregulated, money grubbing snake oil salesmen who care only about profits; they are not like the executives and staffs of large pharmaceutical companies who only have the public interest in mind in creating and marketing drugs. Moreover, since taking fish oil like other nutritional interventions, is neither a drug nor surgery, it is by its very nature ineffective and unsafe.

The smilie below is slightly wrong. It says "sarcasm." It should say "irony."

:sarcasm:

5. Your basic premise is incorrect
and you really should read what medicine actually says rather than reading what nutcases tell you it says.

8. It's not my premise
The entire post was ironic, and repeats in only slightly exaggerated form, some of the arguments I have heard certain resident self appointed experts make on this forum.

My premise, which was not expressed indirectly (through irony), is that I agreed with the article and your posting it.

12. What does a steady diet of strawmen do for you?
Because somebody around here sure seems to favor them.

I guess it's true. You are what you eat.

14. That isn't even funny as satire or irony. It's really fucking stupid.
Edited on Fri Sep-19-08 02:02 PM by Evoman
The first thing my doctors ask about when I go is about my diet. Good nutrition can help reverse, or help manage, a lot of illnesses...especially the ones to do with metabolic syndrome. It never hurts to eat right...however, some conditions won't be cured by diet alone, and thats where medication has it's place.

I have never heard anyone from the scientific community, nor on DU, say anything remotely like the garbage you posted above. If anyone in the biology department at the university of I work at heard you say that bullshit, they would think you were mentally ill.
