Does anyone know anything about the pseudomonas bacteria?
My sister in law has come down with it and its really scary. She thinks she got it at the dentist.

She was able to survive the initial thrust but 'will have to be on antibiotics for a long, long time.

1. I hope your sister-in-law gets well quickly.
I know pseudomonas smells like grapes. You can smell it a mile away.

2. Please Lord, don't let me click on this thread again because I'll have all the symptoms
and I was at the dentist not all that long ago.

I am being completely serious and not trying to make light of your thread or question.

3. It's a nasty little bug but it does respond to antibiotics
although resistance is increasing. I used to see it as an opportunistic infection in people who were maintained on mechanical ventilation and in surgical wounds. It has a characteristic color and odor that no one who has seen it will ever forget.

I'm guessing hers spread to her blood, not a nice place to grow bugs.

The whole technical scoop is at Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudomonas

4. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, I presume. Opportunistic bacterial pathogen.
Often causes nosocomial (hospital-acquired) infections. It was our resident nosocomial bug in ICU at the CSU VTH when I was in school. Patients with various catheters and tubes that stayed in place a long time tended to get it.

That's my only experience with it. I learned tons about it in undergraduate pathogenic bacteriology, but have forgotten virtually everything. I've never turned up a Pseudomonas infection in my feline patients at all.

5. It is a common bug in the hospital
I have a good friend that I gave gentamycin injections to for a long time till her kidney infection cleared. Responds well to antibiotics was my experience as a nurse.

6. Very interesting. Thanks for your comments.
She was in the hospital for 3 weeks and now has to go to a nursing home for 6 weeks.

Yikes! I'm surprised the dentist didn't advise her to take antibiotics ahead of time as she is elderly and they often have health situations as she does.

I told her she'll be out in time for Spring Training at least - she's a huge Cubs fan.

7. I only know that it
smells terrible
is incredibly nasty and tenacious
infected one of the children I used to care for in my nursing days. He had it in his lungs. His diagnosis was Cystic Fibrosis :-(

Keep your SIL as healthy as possible so she can fight fight fight.

10. pseudomonas totally thrives in the CF lung environment and develops
antibiotic resistance fairly quickly. I used to see it a lot in Medicare claims as part of bladder/kidney infections in the elderly

Nasty stuff.

11. Its incredible at age 85 she seems to have survived and just needs to be on
strong IV antibiotics for several weeks.

Her mom lived to be 100 so I guess she has a good immune system.

9. My grandson has (or had) pseudomonas.
He's six now, but has been on a trach since birth due to "congenital" anomalies. As far as I know, it's an opportunistic infection that usually strikes folks who have compromised immune systems. He used to have it quite a bit. I can't think of the last time he had it, though.
