My best friend...
has just been terminated from her job of 16 years. She was given an option of either being fired or of resigning without any warning at all that she was being considered. Thankfully she refused to sign either choice until she had a chance to read them through and understand which gives her the best option.
Eight years ago her husband of 30 years walked out on her and the job (at a public library) was her economic security and her emotional lifeline. Supposedly she had been given a lower performance rating but she really is 63 yrs old with very bad rheumatoid arthritis. With the loss of the job goes her medical coverage that keeps her functioning.
It was hard to decide which forum to post on: health, gender; or the one not available - age. But this event, that is happening all of the country, shows how far from grace our sense of community has fallen. We are not even on a par with third world countries on the moral scale if this sort of meanness will be allowed to continue. It is time to strengthen the social net and to demand universal health care.  :hurts:

1. Sorry for your friends troubles.
That is so wrong, at her age she should be treated with more respect, especially after 16 years there.

I hope things work out for her.

2. I'm so sorry to hear this...
I'm afraid that this story is becoming more common, these days.

The United States has become a third world country -- there is no denying it. Education sucks, medical care sucks, infrastructure falling apart, jobs going away...

It is a crime that there is no universal health care and that the American people have to suffer because of greed.

4. I would think that she might have a case for age discrimination.
But she can file for soc. sec. since she is over 62. Sorry to hear about her troubles.

5. In my state
she is better off being fired for no cause, if she can show that she was. Quitting voluntarily means no unemployment whatsoever. Even if they say they have "cause", she would have a chance to present her case to show that it is age or health related (assuming her attendance was acceptable).

I also agree she may need to speak to an attorney.
