Anyone have any experience with "thyroid storm"?

My wife's having an episode (for a few days now) of very high BP (150/100) ... and that's ON blood pressure medication. Our Dr. thinks she might have thyroid storm, and she's getting blood drawn for tests as we speak.

This scares me because everything I see on the web says that thyroid storm has a mortality rate of 10-20% WITH treatment.

For years, we've been trying to run down an auto-immune condition she's got, and the possibility of thyroid condition has come up before. But nothing from tests has ever indicated it.

Anyone have any direct (yourself or a loved one) experience or episodes that were verified as thyroid storm?

2. I've never heard the phrase before--is it a thyroid gone haywire?

I have two relatives (one an in-law) with thyroid troubles, but they manage very well with medication.

4. Yes.

I just looked it up.

It is when the thyroid releases large amounts of thyroid hormone in a very short time.

6. This IS what happened to my in law, almost 30 yrs ago

He was sick as a dog, they thought he was a goner. He came out of it and was fine for several decades. Now he's on thyroid meds, because his thyroid is sluggish in his older age, but he's doing fine.

It was a frightening business, though--ER, ICU, whole nine yards.

I was diagnosed with a storm thyroid after a miscarriage. They said it was the reason for the miscarriage. This was 6 years ago. I initially went on a low dosage of synthroid. I was off the synthroid for a year and had blood work done that said I was in the right levels for being alright. I remain 50 lbs overweight. I don't know if your wife is having hot and cold issues, but I grew up in Arizona and always loved the heat, but during this episode my intolerance for heat was diminished. I guess I wanted to let you know that I have been moving on. I hope this gives you and your wife some peace.

7. Sorry about your miscarriage. Good to hear you've moved on.

Interestingly, my wife was complaining about how hot it was this morning (she often has heat/cold issues, but this was particularly bugging her). They say intolerance to heat is a symptom. High fever, too. A couple of weeks back, she had a 104 degree fever and didn't even realize it (she was at the doctor for something else).

Whatever it is, she's got her meds and we'll have the test results tomorrow. I guess if her thyroid hormones are through the roof, we'll know. And if they're not, we'll know it wasn't thyroid storm.

... that I can't take Aleve for a knee injury because of my thyroid condition.
He says Aleve raises your BP significantly if you take
thyroid meds.

9. I went thru a storm 10yrs ago thought I would die...

the heat was pure torture, ( I live in FL) was very tired, could not lift my arms above my head, would stand and fall, heart palpitations, trouble with my eye sight. When thru all the test in the world only to find out my T's were out of sink! Took my medication for 6 months, went on a strict diet and began power walking everyday!
Today, I'm healthier for it and still have my thyroid which is tested every six months!

10. Yes, but don't expect much. My dog had a thyroid storm brought

on my over medication of thyroid replacement horome. She had be hypothyroid for about 2 years and my vet kept upping her meds as she continued to gain weight and pant. The day she had her 'thyroid storm' she had high blood pressure and very rapid heart beat. Then she kind of passed out as I rushed her to the vet's.

It's possible that your wife's condition is from hyperthyroidism or an overly active thyroid.
