Landmark Study For GSK's Cervical Cancer Vaccine Published In The Lancet
(This vaccine - Cervarix - will compete with Merck's Gardasil.)

The final analysis of the largest efficacy trial of a cervical cancer vaccine is published today in The Lancet. The study, involving 18,644 women, confirmed GlaxoSmithKline's Cervarix(R) is highly effective at protecting against the two most common cervical cancer-causing human papillomavirus (HPV) types, 16 and 18. The study also showed that the vaccine provides cross-protection against HPV types 31, 33 and 45, the three most common cancer-causing virus types beyond 16 and 18.

Thomas Breuer, Head of Global Clinical R&D and Chief Medical Officer of GSK Biologicals commented: "These excellent study results confirm the efficacy offered by Cervarix(R) against HPV 16 and 18. For the first time the results show that this vaccine was effective against cervical pre-cancers associated with the five most common cancer-causing virus types. This is really good news for primary prevention of cervical cancer as it indicates the vaccine could offer women additional protection against cervical cancer beyond what had at first been anticipated."

The study showed that in women who complied with the trial protocol procedures (87% of the total sample), the vaccine provided 92.9 percent protection against cervical pre-cancers (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 2+ or CIN 2+) associated with HPV 16 or 18. A further analysis of the same cohort which excluded lesions not likely to be caused by HPV 16 and 18 revealed that the vaccine was 98.1 percent effective against cervical pre-cancers (CIN 2+) caused by these two types.

2. No wonder Gardasil was in such a hurry to get mandated, before
there was any competition. Their best chance to establish a major market foothold was to get in fast, before there were any alternative vaccines.

3. Actually I don't think the proposed mandate was specific to Gardasil at all.
Cervarix was well along in development at the time. Just as there are multiple manufacturers of other mandated vaccines, what matters is that the vaccine works, not who makes it.

only product currently approved for the market. And even a 6 month marketing advantage is huge; doctors are human and they're likely to continue ordering the vaccine they started with.

5. What if the next product is cheaper?
Are doctors human, and they'll keep with the same vaccine, or are doctors greedy and they'll go with what's cheaper?

Better decide which unjustified stereotype of medical professionals you want to go with.

But that's all I'll say for this unrelated threadjacking.

6. I wouldn't worry too much about threadjacking.
At least my posts are keeping your OP from dropping into oblivion.

7. And I appreciate that!
I know there is a small but vocal and dedicated group who despise evidence-based medicine and breakthrough treatments like Gardasil. It is great to have you keep kicking this thread and reminding everyone of the facts.

8. Wow, that's fantastic
A 98+% protection against the two most common strains of cancer-causing HPV, and cross-protection against the next three most common strains of cancer-causing HPV. Amazing! Again, some more really good news.

9. it is great news

and I do hope all the conspiracy theory / anti-vaccine naysayers get a chance to see it.

Had this been available when I was in my teens, chances are good I'd still have my cervix. I hope a lot fewer women have to go through the worry, pain and possible ill effects of even "minor" surgery like I had, now that this is available.

I also hope it becomes available some day in our lifetimes to women in the less developed world, who don't have access to the PAP screening that has made it possible to detect conditions like I had and thus reduce the cervical cancer death rate dramatically in the developed world.

11. Great quotes
"There is a great deal of evidence to prove that immunisation of children does more harm than good." - Dr. J. Anthony Morris (formerly Chief Vaccine Control Officer at the US Federal Drug Admin.)

"Pumping more vaccines into the body without understanding such basics as how they'll affect immune system function over time borders on the criminal." --Nicholas Regush, ABCNEWS.com

"The incidence of asthma has been found to be five times more common in vaccinated children." -The Lancet, 1994.

A report on a study of 11 healthy individuals to determine the effects of routine tetanus booster vaccinations, showed that the vaccinations weaken the immune system of the recipients. (New England Journal of Medicine, January 19, 1984.)

"There is no doubt in my mind that in the U.K. alone some hundreds, if not thousands, of well infants have suffered irreparable brain damage needlessly (due to being vaccinated)." - Prof. G. Stewart, Dev. Biol. Stand. Vol. 61: pp 395-405. 1985.

A case-control study has shown that 41 percent of meningitis occurred in children vaccinated against the disease. The vaccine's protective efficacy was minus 58 percent. This means that children are much more likely to get the disease if they are vaccinated. (JAMA, 1988, Osterholm et al., 260: 1423-1428.) Great quotes

"In an outbreak of measles in Western Sydney in 1993, 73% of cases occurred in children aged 5-9 years who had been vaccinated against measles according to their parents." -Medical Journal of Australia, 1995.

"In the USA in 1978, they mandated vaccination and it resulted in a three fold increase in the reported incidence of whooping cough." -Dr. Viera Scheibner showing graphs from Tokai Journal of Experimental Biology and Medicine 1988.

"May as well consult a butcher on the value of vegetarianism as a doctor on the worth of vaccination."---Bernard Shaw

12. Yes, and abortion causes breast cancer, and stem cell research is an abomination with no medical
value.

And no, I am NOT saying that all vaccines always work or have no dangers. But opposing vaccinations in all circumstances is more like a moral crusade than evidence-based health practice.

'The incidence of asthma has been found to be five times more common in vaccinated children." -The Lancet, 1994.'

Actually that isn't surprising. It doesn't mean that vaccinations cause asthma. It means that people with asthma, and their close family members, are more likely to be vaccinated, as they are more at risk from the diseases that vaccinations can prevent.
