People who don't carry health insurance because they say they don't need it, should...
be required to sign a legal document relinquishing any ability for them to ever declare bankruptcy due to medical bills, or to have their medical expenses written off or forgiven.

Make sure they know that if an unexpected illness or accident or disease does arise, and they do need medical care, then those costs will follow them for their entire life,
for as long as it takes to pay them off.

1. It's wrong to not have insurance if you can afford it...
because by doing so you're making insurance more expensive for everyone else. Your actions hurt others. That's why health insurance in MA is so great. But even with that said I don't like your idea of a life sentence for needing medical care.

6. A thousand dollar a month premium + expensive co-pays prevents ,,
a lot of people from having it. How many people carry adequate car insurance?

2. Thats why I'm in favor of mandatory coverage and a fee if you don't

A penalty is fair and compassionate and better than denying treatment without money up front and letting someone die. This of course includes a sliding scale for lower incomes

3. Correct. And it's vital that younger/healthier people be in the system to help finance
their own, and others' healthcare.

4. hrm
Yeah, and insurance companies can just go ahead and increase rates to whatever their little heart's desire and buy up all of the hospitals and clinics (continuing to jack up the cost of service to the "uninsured" beyond ANY sense of reason).

Awesome idea!!

5. You are not using that old wet noodle on top of your shoulders are you?
A Dr. takes an oath that he/ she is to always help and to do no harm. A hospital cannot refuse to treat you with a medical emergency. The number 1 reason people do not carry health insurance is because they cannot afford to. If you do not have an employer provided plan, you don't get help with the annual cost of insurance. Most plans cost $7 to $15,000.00/ yr depending on the family size. If you go it alone the plans cover less, have higher deductibles, and ceiling amt on the lifetime expenses the policy/ company will pay... that is if they haven't already figured out a way to exclude, deny, or drop your coverage when you need it. If it wasn't for my hubby's company picking up part of the expense for health insurance, we would be an un-insured family (not by choice).

Insurance needs to be thrown out. We need a single-payer system medicaid/care for all. I work at a hotel.. family style.. discount priced... I see a huge cross-section of people from across the country. The general agreement is that they'd all love to sign up for medicare like granny and would be willing to pay more into the system to sign up for the service.. and agree its fair to assess the costs based on take home pay.. with the richest paying the most. If its great for granny, its good for the rest of us. AN honest debate on health care would allow us to have this type of system and screw the money interests.
