Uninsured Americans aged 50-64

AARP estimated that 13% of Americans aged 50-64 were uninsured in 2007...and that was before the economic meltdown.

It is probably closer to 20% now.

We should be able to buy into the Medicare program. Expand Medicare now!

1. I as in that group till a bit over a year ago. I could not fine insurance
that found my "acceptable" because I had had bypass surgery in 2003. Many companies told me they would cover me, till they found my history - one even went so far as to cash my check - around $750 a month. I found out from one company -very quietly and unofficially - that NO PRIVATE INSURER will insure anyone who has had chest surgery for heart or circulatory problems. Except Blue Cross. They were going to take me on a very limited basis - no drug coverage, limited amounts for hospitalization and limited doctor visits and I assume limited tests - for $800 a month. But I found out that my state - PA - supports a private insurer that covers everything I need, including drugs, and after 18 months of paying for it - about $250 a month - becomes cost free to me till I am elegible for Medicare.

There's that evil government insurance again. I can only hope the Republicans don't come into power in PA and screw the program up.

2. They need to do that.
A lot of employers aren't hiring older people because of the insurance costs.

3. Which is why I moved back to MA
Took two months, but now I have health coverage. BIT relief considering I am facing possible surgery in the future. I went to a clinic today and for the first time in years did not have to worry about how I was going to pay an amount I could not afford. My usual $103 prescription was only $2.

If I had to pay $100-$300 a month to get covered and receive the care I got today, it would be so worth it. But I didn't have to pay anything.
