FDA: Merck's Gardasil stops genital warts in boys
By Matthew Perrone, AP Business Writer Matthew Perrone, Ap Business Writer – Fri Sep 4, 12:44 pm ET

WASHINGTON – Merck's blockbuster vaccine Gardasil, which is already used to prevent cervical cancer in women, also stops viruses that cause genital warts in men, the Food and Drug Administration said Friday.

In documents posted online, the FDA said the vaccine prevented genital warts in males 90 percent of the time.

The vaccine works by blocking the two strains of the human papilloma virus, or HPV, which causes irregular growths and rare types of cancer in male genitals.

1. good.
i'm for this vaccine and if i have kids, i would encourage them to get vaccinated.

HPV is an unnecessary cancer risk for both sexes.

4. I say, good.
Give it to the boys then. Leave the girls out of it for once.

5. That doesn't make much sense in the case of sexually transmitted diseases.

6. My understanding is this:
1. The societal cost of treating HPV infection in men is low, regardless of the personal difficulties for any one person.

2. The societal cost of treating HPV infection in women just barely balances the cost of vaccinating girls, so a slight argument can be made that we should vaccinate girls.

3. Vaccinate enough girls, and we'll stop the spread of HPV among many males.

Personally, I think measurements of societal cost are bull shit if you're the one who ends up with genital warts or cervical cancer.
