Nasty Mosquito-borne Chikungunya Virus is Coming Out of Africa
Edited on Sat Sep-19-09 02:05 AM by steven johnson
There is this really nasty virus carried by one of our mosquito species which is coming.

Chikungunya can cause fever, headache, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, muscle pain, rash and joint pain lasting weeks to months. It can be fatal and there is no vaccine.

Air travel is guaranteed to import the infected mosquitoes and humans.

WASHINGTON, Sept 18 (Reuters) - The United States and Europe face a new health threat from a mosquito-borne disease far more unpleasant than the West Nile virus that swept into North America a decade ago, a U.S. expert said on Friday.

Chikungunya virus has spread beyond Africa since 2005, causing outbreaks and scores of fatalities in India and the French island of Reunion. It also has been detected in Italy, where it has begun to spread locally, as well as France.

"Unlike West Nile virus, where nine out of 10 people are going to be totally asymptomatic, or may have a mild headache or a stiff neck, if you get Chikungunya you're going to be sick," he said. "The disease can be fatal. .. "There is no vaccine."

The virus could spread globally now because it can be carried by the Asian tiger mosquito, ...(which) tends to live in southern regions east of the Mississippi but has been found as far afield as western Texas, Minnesota and New Jersey.

3. It can always spread
you need tiger misquitos and a sick person to be bitten. We have had very few cases in main land france in regions with tiger misquitos even while there was an epidemic on Reunion Island. I was there during an outbreak. People do not have screens on their windows, people were using lots of bug repellant on their skin and burning nasty smelling things maid by raid I think, to keep the bugs away. I just took my chances and had no problems for the two weeks I was there.

4. This is one reason I hope this country gets health care reformed
I would dearly love to cling to the high desert.

The only mosquitoes around here are in a narrow band next to the Rio Grande.

Water doesn't stand around long enough for the little bastards to breed elsewhere.
