US maternal mortality 'still high'
The US spends more money on mothers' health than any other nation, yet women there are more likely to die in childbirth than in most other developed countries, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and WHO.

Jim Scythes' wife, Valerie, died from blood clots shortly after giving birth, leaving him to raise his two-year-old daughter Isabella on his own.

1. The US spends more on some mothers
but doesn't provide basic care to all mothers. That's one problem. Another is the high rate of c-section, many of them unnecessary. Those are major surgery and carry a whole other set of risks.

The racial disparity can possibly be traced to the lack of prenatal care among poor, predominately black mothers. Problems that could be identified early and treated are missed until it's too late, endangering both mother and infant.

The statistics here are dreadful. They're getting worse, not better.

If we don't get affordable, universal insurance, they will continue to worsen.
