Suit claims birth control warning not enough

Dozens of women claim in lawsuits filed in Indianapolis that they suffered strokes, gall bladder disease, and other serious health effects from the birth control pills Yaz and Yasmin.

The maker of those contraceptives is Bayer Pharmaceuticals.

Bayer claims the drugs not only prevent pregnancy, but also treat extreme irritability and moderate acne.

But plaintiffs say the drugs have serious side-effects. You may have seen the commercials featuring attractive young women talking about birth control pills with the hip youthful names.

Plaintiffs claim the drug's maker Bayer Pharmaceuticals marketed its allegedly potent birth control pill to young women, and young women suffered serious side effects like pulmonary embolisms, strokes, and gall bladder illness that necessitated the removal of the gall bladder.

"Gallbladder illness is a middle age disease. That's when you're going to have this. That's when you're going to have your gall bladder removed. We're seeing this in teenagers," said Will Riley, an attorney representing plaintiffs in a class action lawsuit.

24-Hour News 8 contacted Bayer corporate leaders by phone. An executive sent a statement saying "Bayer has received lawsuits regarding its Drospirenone-containing contraceptives. The company is in the process of gathering information on these cases, but the complaints we have reviewed so far pertain to side effects that are warned about in the labeling of all oral contraceptives, including ours. Bayer will defend itself vigorously against these lawsuits.”

1. Yeah, I saw the ads. I also saw the second ads.
I'm not a woman, but if I were, I would stay the hell away from Yaz/Yasmin. Something is truly fucked up there.

2. My Daughter Has Been on Depo-Provera for 12 years
for PCOS. She had her infected, three times normal size, gallstone-stuffed gall bladder removed this September.

I can't wait to find out what other surprises are in store--they won't let me authorize her for a hysterectomy (at 26, and she's so disabled that she could never successfully raise a child) so she stays on the hormones...

Sometimes I think that the rule makers need some exposure to the people they are hurting.

3. Considering how readily it seems to
me that doctors are willing to do hysterectomies for any reason whatsoever, I'm amazed your daughter can't get one. And what is PCOS?

4. Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome
Edited on Mon Feb-08-10 09:22 PM by Demeter
Swollen ovaries, extremely irregular periods, incredible amounts of hair (all over) and she nearly hemorrhaged to death at the age of 15 until the surgeons finally gave up treating her with hormones (which imbalance caused the problem) and did a D&C.

The mentally disabled are protected from their parents or anyone else sterilizing them...but it's okay to kill them off slowly with hormones, I guess. She nearly died of the gall bladder. If she had been in a group home, it's certain she would have.

Don't get me started.

5. "But plaintiffs say the drugs have serious side-effects"
What a coincidence, so does Bayer, right there in the commercials!
