'Third-hand smoke' could damage health -- upholstery & clothing release carcinogens
Just when you thought smokers could only hurt you with direct smoke, it turns out that the smoke residue can slowly release carcinogen residues.

And to your smokers, YOU ARE RELEASING CARCINOGENS, no matter how much you want to be in denial.

Lingering residue from tobacco smoke which clings to upholstery, clothing and the skin releases cancer-causing agents, work in PNAS journal shows.

Berkeley scientists in the US ran lab tests and found "substantial levels" of toxins on smoke-exposed material.

They say while banishing smokers to outdoors cuts second-hand smoke, residues will follow them back inside and this "third-hand smoke" may harm.

Opponents called it a laughable term designed to frighten people unduly.

The scientists say nicotine stains on clothing, furniture and wallpaper can react with a common indoor pollutant to generate dangerous chemicals called tobacco-specific nitrosamines or TSNAs.

1. To be fair, there's this line:
"They are now doing more research to better understand what threat, if any, TSNAs pose."

So, they haven't actually established that any of this is harmful, or at least present in harmful levels.

9. I'll grant you that. So-called "third-hand smoke" can't be beneficial. At the same time...
neither might it be malignant. Even the folks behind the study aren't sure about the health effects. I'm not saying smoking, in any case, is ever a good thing. I'm just saying that a lot more needs to be done before this newest finding can be taken seriously as a health risk.

12. no doubt . . . but it is the collective health risks that puts us in jeopardy
A scientific study may show that third-hand smoke is harmless in isolation.

But coupled with air pollution, water polution, the impact of fertilizers, water bottles, and everything else that puts our health at risk, it is better that we not be subject to it, particularly if we wish to personally avoid any artifacts of smoking.

4. Capitalizing blatant hyperbole doesn't make it more accurate,
you know.

From the article:

They are now doing more research to better understand what threat, if any, TSNAs pose.

"If any". An important modifier.

There is nothing in the article to suggest a definitive answer to the question posed by researchers, so your written SCREECH is over the top.

What do your drive that contributes to green house gases and send money to OPEC and third world dictators?

I sleep in a room at 62 degrees and had a gas bill less than $100 last month. What do you keep your thermostat at?

13. My wonderful Dad
smoked for 65 years. Thank God he quit when he was 80 or he might not have made it to 90. Mom must have been exposed to that 2nd and 3rd hand smoke and was taken from us at age 92. Damn smoke.

15. Thank God I quit 4 months ago
Dads' sister, never smoked and died at 80.

For me, I didn't quit to live longer. I don't want to live forever, just a little better is enough for me.
