11-hour days are bad for the heart
http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE64A2SR20100511

People working 10 or 11 hours a day are more likely to suffer serious heart problems, including heart attacks, than those clocking off after seven hours, researchers said on Tuesday.

The finding, from an 11-year study of 6,000 British civil servants, does not provide definitive proof that long hours cause coronary heart disease but it does show a clear link, which experts said may be due to stress.

In all, there were 369 cases of death due to heart disease, non-fatal heart attacks and angina among the London-based study group -- and the risk of having an adverse event was 60 percent higher for those who worked three to four hours overtime.

Working an extra one to two hours beyond a normal seven-hour day was not associated with increased risk.

"It seems there might a threshold, so it is not so bad if you work another hour or so more than usual," said Dr Marianna Virtanen, an epidemiologist at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health and University College London.

The higher incidence of heart problems among those working overtime was independent of a range of other risk factors including smoking, being overweight or having high cholesterol.

1. But who on earth works just a seven hour day? Everyone I know works 12 hour days and if they
are women, go home to put in at least another couple of hours on the home front.

2. hey, fwiw I know a lot of men who work their asses off at home too
I remodeled a house and cooked almost every night. I agree many men are slobs and don't contribute, but give us a little credit please.

3. Some men do a lot at home, that's true. But I mentioned women specifically because most women

I know do a lot around the house. Some men do a lot around the house. Recent studies have shown that while men are slowly changing from the 1950's in terms of amount done around the house, they haven't changed that much yet, overall. Of coure, this only applies to heterosexual relationships - I am sure gay relationships have a much more equal dynamic at work.

Here's some research:

American men are doing about 16 hours of housework a week, up from 12 hours in 1965, according to a study by the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research (ISR), Ann Arbor. The weekly housework hours of American women have declined sharply since 1965. Yet, they are still doing much more housework than men--about 27 hours a week.

The findings are part of a study of time-use trends in the U.S. and other industrialized nations. Researchers analyzed data from time-diaries, considered the most-accurate way to assess how people spend their time, supplementing the analysis with data from questionnaires asking men and women to recall how much time they spent on housework in an average week, including cooking, cleaning, and doing other chores around the house.

5. for what it's worth, I do agree that far too many men see anything
beyond yard work as "women's work" and it pisses me off quite a bit. I also agree that women are far more likely to be the ones doing the daily cleaning chores, but I do know a lot of men who are actively trying to fight this stereotype.

4. Well, I work 2-3 hours a day, live alone, so I do the work here too,
but only if I feel like it. It's nice to have that option.

6. Well this doesn't make me happy...
My husband, after being out of work for about year, found a job which seemed perfect. Until he started..he works at least 12 every day, and 8 on the weekends. Granted Sunday he works from home, and he only goes in the office every other Sat. but when he's not in the office he's at home working, taking calls, fixing problems. The salary seemed really good...until the hours kicked in. Then, not so much.

His phone rings at 10 or 11 o'clock at night and starts again at 5 in the morning.

But there's nothing else out there right now. It's better than being out of work.
