Serious Errors with Certain Blood Glucose Monitoring Test Strips ~ FDA Warning
This http://www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/Safety/AlertsandNotices/PatientAlerts/ucm177189.htm#attachment">FDA warning is from August 2009, but a family member who was using a monitor on the list below was never notified. It could have cost him his life. Sharing with others who may be impacted.

For Diabetic patients and/or their caregivers Advice

NEVER use GDH-PQQ* glucose meters or test strips if you are using drug products or therapies that contain certain sugars other than glucose. ~ *GDH-PQQ stands for glucose dehydrogenase pyrroloquinoline quinone

...
Here is a full list of to known affected Meters/Strips:

Therefore, healthcare providers (and patients) should refer to device labeling or consult with test strip manufacturers to confirm the type of methodology used.

I found that Onetouch does not use the questionable technology noted above ...

http://www.onetouchdiabetes.com/pqq-release">OneTouch® Brand Blood Glucose Monitoring Systems for home use and SureStep® Systems for hospitals and home use do not contain GDH-PQQ enzyme that was recently referenced in an FDA Public Health Notification. OneTouch® and SureStep® Systems, past and present, are unaffected by this issue. In fact, our products are glucose specific, which eliminates the risk of falsely elevated results from other sugars.

OneTouch® would like to remind people with diabetes to continue to test their blood glucose as directed by their health care providers.

The OneTouch Mini is inexpensive as well, $20 at our local drug store.

3. I never received a notice and in fact I just refilled my test strips
and they gave me the accu-check aviva strips. Why didn't they recall them. And I noticed. At the hospital they took my blood sugar and it was 113 but the next day at home it was 155. It stayed high and they put me on another diabetic drug. I now take glipizide (first one) and then metformin. So if the blood sugar is abnormally high I wouldn't have needed the metformin. I am going to call my doctor Monday.

5. Good question on the recall.
NONE of these monitors should be sold. The bologna about medications effecting the results are just that - bologna.

4. Thanks for this
I am not diabetic but am very overweight and was considering getting the One Touch mini as a way to keep track of my status and log any improvements.

6. Adding this to the record ... my family member is NOT on any of the meds noted
and tested with FALSE high blood sugar levels. IMHO, anyone who has had similar issues should report them to the FDA.
