Snap, Crackle, Slap: FTC Objects to Kellogg's Rice Krispies Health Claim

The Federal Trade Commission found fault with assertions the company made about various types of its Rice Krispies cereal.

As a result, the FTC said Thursday the company has agreed to abide by new restrictions under a settlement written last year regarding health claims the company made about its Frosted Mini-Wheats cereal.

"We expect more from a great American company than making dubious claims—not once but twice—that its cereals improve children's health," said Jon Leibowitz, chairman of the FTC.

On packages, Kellogg claimed Rice Krispies "now helps support your child's immunity" with "25% daily value of antioxidants and nutrients—vitamins A,B, C and E." The back of boxes stated that Rice Krispies "has been improved to include antioxidants and nutrients that your family needs to help them stay healthy."

In a statement, Kellogg said it has a long history of responsible advertising. "We stand behind the validity of our product claims and research, so we agreed to an order that covers those claims," the company said.

19th Century. Most of today's cereal companies did. When they were founded, the claims they made were...well...magnificent. See the film "The Road to Wellville," based on Kellogg's sanitarium in Battle Creek, MI, for an example of how outrageous it all was back in the day. John Harvey Kellogg, himself, was quite the quack.

A racist, too. It was quite a time in our history.

2. Ingredient list:
RICE, SUGAR, SALT, MALT FLAVORING, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP

So, after the highly processed and nutrient void "rice" base of this stuff, you're treated to two forms of sugar, artificial flavoring and salt. And then they go and add back some vitamins. How nice of them:

IRON, ASCORBIC ACID (VITAMIN C), NIACINAMIDE, PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE (VITAMIN B6), RIBOFLAVIN (VITAMIN B2), THIAMIN HYDROCHLORIDE (VITAMIN B1), VITAMIN A PALMITATE, FOLIC ACID, VITAMIN D AND VITAMIN B12

I doubt any of this is even soluble by the human body provided in this form, rather than naturally occurring in the food like it would with real puffed rice or brown rice.

My verdict -- yes, they are totally full of shit and nobody should be buying the product.

3. I prefer Rice Chex - less calories, sweetened with Molassass
better tasting, almost as "snap-crackle-pop" and easier to use as a gluten-free, low-carb substitute for flour for a pie crust.
